COLLEGE PARK, MD - No. 3 Maryland field hockey begins the 2023 campaign with a trip to the west coast. The Terps open the year with a match at Stanford followed by contests with Cal and UC Davis.

 
Last Time we met
  • Maryland is undefeated against all three squads throughout the program's history. 
  • The Terrapins hold an all-time 9-0 record over Stanford. The two teams met last season in College Park with Maryland pulling out a 1-0 victory.
  • Head Coach Missy Meharg holds a 12-0 win streak against Cal. The Terps collected their twelfth program win against the Golden Bears with a 4-0 shutout in 2021.
  • Maryland and UC Davis have only met twice before. The matchup on Monday will be the first meeting since 2018, where the Terps earned a 6-1 victory.

  • The Terrapins return multiple key players at all positions. 
  • Hope Rose was the Terps' leading scorer at the end of the 2022 campaign with 36 points from 14 goals and eight assists. She returns to College Park for her junior season. She is joined by fifth year Margot Lawn, who ended the year with 14 points from six goals and two assists.
  • Nathalie Fiechter returns for her graduate season after spending four years with the Terps. In that time, she collected 24 points from three goals and 18 assists, while leading the team in assists last season. Joined by senior Rayne Wright and fifth year Maura Verleg, the trio remain a consistent presence on the back line. Wright and Verleg are serving as captains for the 2023 season.
  • Paige Kieft returns in goal for the Terps. The junior collected eight wins in last seasons run, including an impressive performance against Rutgers to aid her team to a Big Ten regular season title.

  • Maryland welcomes nine new additions to the Terrapin family, including three transfers and six freshmen.
  • Transfer students Ashlyn Carr and Sammy Popper add a veteran touch to the roster, coming to Maryland for their graduate year. Carr joins the squad after competing at the University of Delaware where she started in every game of her undergraduate career. The midfielder tallied 75 points from 20 goals and 35 assists for the Blue Hens.
  • Popper collected 69 points from 28 goals and 13 assists during her four years at Princeton. She started in every game of her career with the Tigers, earning multiple recognitions including Ivy League Rookie of the Year and two-time First Team All-Ivy League.
  • Sophomore Hannah Boss joins the team from the Netherlands, where she competed on HC Klein Zwitserland for nearly 15 years.
  • Freshmen Alyssa Klebasko, Maya Everett, Josie Hollamon, Maddie Vasilios, Maci Bradford and Reagan Beall bring a collection of unique skillets, adding great depth at all positions. Bradford, Hollamon and Klebasko were selected to the U.S. U-21 Junior National Team Selection Camp earlier this summer.

  • Maryland finished the 2022 season with a No. 4 national ranking and a 19-4 record. The group advanced all the way to the NCAA Final Four, making its 21 appearance in program history.
  • The Terrapins clinched the Big Ten regular season title with an impressive 7-1 conference record.
  • The 2023 season is already off to a successful run with the recognition as the No. 3 ranked team by the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll earlier this week.

Championship coaching
  • Missy Meharg returns for her 36th season as head coach. A nine-time National Coach of the Year recipient, Meharg brings an unprecedented level of consistency and excellence to the Maryland field hockey program. 
  • Meharg became the third coach in Division I history to reach 600 wins in 2021. She is not shy of championships as she has lead the Terps to seven national titles, including five in seven years,12 conference tournament crowns,15 conference regular season titles and 19 appearances in the NCAA Semifinals round, including 12 in the NCAA Finals.
  • She is supported by associate head coach Scott Tupper (third season), assistant coach Kasey Tapman Asper (third season) and goalie specialist Natalie Hunter Cyrus (first season).
