Q&A With Chance Stephens
9/11/2023 9:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Question: So when did you start playing basketball? And what was your inspiration for starting?
Chance Stephens: I started playing basketball when I was seven. I think just started off with just being me and my dad. It was a lot of us just spending time together. But over time, I think I just started playing basketball because of the emotions that come with it and that you can really just be yourself out there.
Q: What is your favorite most memorable moment from your high school career?
CS: I would say my sophomore year playing with DJ Davis. He's at Butler right now and Lamont Butler, he's at San Diego State and hit that game-winning shot. They went to the national championship game last year during March Madness. We went to the CIF championship together. Hanging with them the whole year was a cool experience. I'd say that's my best high school basketball experience.
Q: if you were to organize a team bonding activity or event what would it be and why?
CS: Probably paintball. You get the emotions out and everyone is just having fun. You're not thinking about holding that back; everyone is just playing the same thing. And there is communication involved with it too.
Maryland added a pure shooter in Chance Stephens, but he's expecting to provide a lot more.

Q: What type of music do you listen to before the game and could you give us a song suggestion?
CS: I would listen to Kodak Black "No Flocking."
Q: What made you choose Maryland?
CS: I think wanting to be closer to my dad's side of the family because I don't really see them as much. And this like a second home for me because I have a whole family out here. Being here in Maryland, it's one of the top programs as well so both of those made it just the perfect spot for me to be honest.

Q: What part of Maryland is your dad from
CS: He's from DC actually. My aunt is actually living in Upper Marlboro right now.
Q: Have you been able to connect with any of your teammates since joining the team? And how do you build chemistry and camaraderie within the team?
CS: I've been able to connect with my teammates more, I think, with me having to deal with my injury. Obviously, I can't hoop right now, so when I'm around them we focus on other parts of our life. It's allowed us to spend more time together off the court, but they have all supported my when I'm working on my rehab.

Q: Do you have any funny or interesting nicknames that your previous teammates have given you? And how did they come about?
CS: My Instagram name is 'Chance The Sniper'. I got that nickname from my uncle when I was 12 and most of my teammates have just called me 'Snipe' since then.
Q: Do you have any unusual skills? Or techniques or talents you have off the basketball court that you might want people to know about?
CS: Maybe, I don't know. I mean, I freestyle a little bit here and there when I'm in a goofy mood.
