Jahmir Young Collects Second Big Ten Player of the Week Honor

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- For the second time this season, Maryland men's basketball guard Jahmir Young has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week. The conference announced the honor for Young in a release on Monday. This is the second time this month that Young picked up the honor, with Young being named player of the week on Jan. 2 after averaging 30.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in wins over Nicholls and UCLA.

Young led Maryland to a pair of key wins over Michigan at home and on the road at No. 10 Illinois. The fifth-year senior averaged 20.0 points, 6.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 steals for the week. He shot 40 percent (14-35) from the floor and was 11-12 (.917) from the free throw line. In the win over No. 10 Illinois on Sunday, Young had a game-high 28 points while adding eight assists, two rebounds, a steal, and a blocked shot. He had 16 points in the second half on 6-of-12 shooting while handing out six assists as the Terps trailed by as many as nine in the first half and were down by two at halftime. The 28 points marked his 50th career 20-point game which leads all active Big Ten players. In the home win over Michigan, he had 12 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals. He scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half, while posting all five of his assists in the second half.

The road win for the Terrapins over No. 10 Illinois was their first win over an AP Top 10 team since a 70-64 victory at No. 6 Wisconsin on Dec. 28, 2020. The win was also the first by a team on the road against a Big Ten team ranked in the top seven in the conference standings, who were previously 19-0 before the Terps win over the Illini.

With his second conference player of the week honor this season, Young becomes the first Terp since Anthony Cowan Jr. to win multiple Big Ten Player of the Week awards in a single season. Cowan Jr. would go on to be named the conference's player of the week on three separate occasions during the 2019-20 season. Like Young, Cowan Jr. would also bring home two in the same month, achieving the feat on Feb 3, 2020 and Feb. 17, 2020.

This adds to an impressive list of career accolades for the fifth-year guard. Young was announced as a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. Young was the first unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten team since Cowan, Jr. in 2019. Young was also named a Preseason All-American by the Blue Ribbon and Lindy's Sports Magazines. Additionally, he was selected as a Preseason All-Big Ten First Team selection and noted as the No. 35 of 100 top players for the upcoming season by the Field of 68 Almanac. Last season, Young was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team, the USBWA All-District Team, and the NABC All-District Second Team. Young is the only active player with 2,100+ points (2,206), 600+ rebounds (670), and 400+ assists (415). Young's 2,206 points are the second-most for an active player, trailing Texas' Max Abmas (2,785).

The Terps continue their road trip on Jan. 17, as they take on Northwestern at the Welsh Ryan Arena. The game will tip-off at 9 p.m. ET and will be televised on the Big Ten Network and air on the Maryland Radio Network.
