COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Fifth-year guard Jahmir Young added another accolade to his phenomenal career as he was named the Big Ten Player of the Week in an announcement by the conference on Tuesday. Young is the first Terrapins' guard to receive this honor since Anthony Cowan Jr. was named the conference's player of the week on three separate occasions during the 2019-20 season.
Young led the Terps to a pair of wins, as the Upper Marlboro native averaged 30.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in wins over Nicholls and UCLA. In the two games, Young was 18-of-32 from the floor, including 7-of-12 from deep, and hit 17-of-19 free throws. He also had seven assists, a block, and a steal in the two games. Against Nicholls, Young had his first double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 rebounds while going a perfect 10-10 for the charity stripe. He followed that game with a career night against UCLA. Young scored a career-high 37 points to lead the Terrapins to their first road win of the season. Young went 13-19 from the floor, while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out three assists. Young's 37 points were the fourth-most for a Terp in a true road game and the most since Diamond Stone scored 39 against Penn State in 2015. Young scored 23 points in the first half to give the Terps a 15-point lead at the intermission. In the closing minutes of the game, Young would score nine-straight points to secure the road win for the Terps over UCLA.
This adds to an impressive list of career accolades for Young. Young was announced as a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. Young was the first unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten team since Cowan, Jr. in 2019. Young was also named a Preseason All-American by the Blue Ribbon and Lindy's Sports Magazines. Additionally, he was selected as a Preseason All-Big Ten First Team selection and noted as the No. 35 of 100 top players for the upcoming season by the Field of 68 Almanac. Last season, Young was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team, the USBWA All-District Team, and the NABC All-District Second Team. Young is the only active player with 2,100+ points (2,206), 600+ rebounds (670), and 400+ assists (415). Young's 2,206 points are the second-most for an active player, trailing Texas' Max Abmas (2,785).
The Terps will be back in action on Tuesday, as they turn their attention to conference play with a meeting with No. 1 Purdue at the XFINITY Center. The game will tip at 7 p.m, and will stream on Peacock and will air on the Maryland Radio Network.
