3-Point Shooting And Defense Key Terps To 73-51 Win Over Nebraska

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Three-point shooting, defense, bench scoring plus a monster day from Julian Reese lifted Maryland to a, 73-51, victory over Nebraska, in its annual Black Out game on Saturday at XFINITY Center. The Terps have won four of their last six games in a competitive Big Ten, moving into fifth place in the conference.

The 22-point victory was the largest margin of victory in a home Big Ten game since March 3, 2016, where Maryland defeated Illinois 81-55. Nebraska's 51 points is the fewest Maryland has allowed this season. The Terps defense also held the Huskers to 39 points over the last 35 minutes.  Maryland (13-8, 5-5 B1G) was spearheaded by Julian Reese's 15 points and a matched career-high of 16 rebounds. Reese had his 10th double-double of the season.

Jamie Kaiser, Jr. had a breakout game and set a career-high 14 points as he knocked down 4-of-5 three-pointers. Kaiser hadn't scored in his last four games. Jahari Long was also hot from long-range as he added 11 points and 3-of-4 threes. Long has made 8-of-10 three-pointers over his last three games.
Both players came off the bench and combined for a total of 25 bench points, the most in a conference game since Maryland had 36 against Illinois on Jan. 21, 2022.

Maryland's leading scorer Jahmir Young had an all-around game with 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Donta Scott became the fifth Terp to record 1,500 points and 800 rebounds in a career. He joined a list that included Maryland greats such as Tom McMillen, Keith Booth, Lonny Baxter and Terence Morris.
The Huskers knocked down seven three-pointers in the first half, including four in the opening five minutes to take a 12-2 lead. Maryland proceeded to outscore Nebraska 42-15 during the remaining 15 minutes of the first half and held the Huskers to no field goals for the final 7:23 of the first half, as they went 0-7 during that frame. The Terps' 44 first-half points were the most in a Big Ten game this season.

After being down by 10 points for the second game in a row, the win was also the Terrapins' second straight comeback from a double-digit deficit. It is the first time since at least the 2008-09 season that Maryland came back from 10 or more to win in back-to-back games.

The Terps continued to neutralize the Husker's offense in the second half. Kevin Willard's full-court press created havoc throughout, forcing 18 turnovers and leading to 25 points off of them. Jordan Geronimo was a main catalyst in the defensive effort as he recorded five combined blocks and steals. Maryland has allowed fewer than 70 points in 11 of its last 12 outings.

Nebraska (15-6, 5-5 B1G) remains winless in all five of its Big Ten games on the road. C.J. Wilcher was the only Husker to reach double-figures as he led his team with 14 points. The Huskers' leading scorer, Keisei Tominaga, was held to just seven points on 3-10 shooting. Junior forward Juwan Gary was inactive due to injury.

Breaking Down the Action
  • Donta Scott became the fifth Terp to tally 1500 points and 800 rebounds with a board early in the first half. However, Maryland was still searching for its first bucket of the game. Julian Reese later got the Terps rolling with a score from the post, but they trailed 9-2 at the first media break.
  • Jahari Long knocked down back-to-back three-pointers and Jamie Kaiser, Jr. added one of his own to close the gap. Kaiser later made two free throws and DeShawn Harris-Smith made a layup to tie the game.
  • Each team had a combined 13 three-pointers with seven minutes remaining in the half. The Terps boasted a 28-25 lead at that time after sparking a 10-0 run.
  • The Terps added two more scoreless runs of 9-0 and 7-0 minutes before heading to the locker room with a 44-27 advantage. The 44 points were the most in the first half of a Big Ten game this season. Nebraska went into halftime missing its last seven shots from the floor. Maryland outscored Nebraska 42-15 during a 15-minute period after going down 12-2 early.
  • Maryland continued its dominance in the second half. Reese notched a double-double while the Terps sparked yet another run with Nebraska turning the ball over three times and being held scoreless for three minutes. The Terrapins enjoyed a 55-32 lead with over 14 minutes left in regulation.
  • Kaiser knocked down his fourth three off the bench and Scott ran the fastbreak for a dunk shortly after and the XFINITY Center exploded. Maryland held an advantage of over 20 points.
  • Maryland cruised to its fourth win over its last six Big Ten games. The win also marked back-to-back games where the Terps came back from a 10-plus point deficit.
Willard's Take
"I've been saying all along, this team's gonna get better and better as the season goes on," Kevin Willard said. "What we saw in November wasn't even close to what we're gonna - and I still think that we're gonna get better. Offensively, we're going to get better. And if we continue to play defense the way we're playing, I'll play against anybody."

From The Guys
"I want to do everything I can to help the team win. Whether that be grabbing rebounds, extra possessions, offensive rebounds, getting steals, just picking the energy up for my team," Jamie Kaiser, Jr said referring to a conversation he had with Willard. "And he said 'Yeah, keep doing that but just keep shooting.' He said 'I have complete and total confidence in you.' And I really appreciate that from him."
