COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland women's soccer lost to No. 20 Penn State, 5-0, at Ludwig Field on Oct. 10. The Terps sit at 3-8-4 overall and 0-6-1 in Big Ten play.
The Terps rattled off two early shots before Penn State (10-3-2, 4-2-1 Big Ten) netted its first shot off a giveaway in the 18th minute. The Terps entered halftime trailing 1-0, but the Nittany Lions added scores in the 52nd, 77th, 79th and 89th minutes.
Maryland totaled nine shots in the contest, each by a different player. Senior goalkeeper Liz Beardsley made five saves. She now has 59 saves on the season, ranking among the top three in the Big Ten.
The match was the first under interim head coach Michael Marchiano's leadership.
Marchiano's Take
"I thought the energy was really good to start the game. Maybe that can be expected, maybe not, but I thought the energy was really good. I think there was a part in the second half where the energy levels dropped off. We were really pleased at halftime, and the challenge was we have to again now. We were very much in the game at halftime. I can't fuss too much about what the girls committed tonight, but as the game went on it got really transitional and that took a lot out of our legs. I got to do a better job as a coach to help them manage that, and we'll do better next time."
