Terps Earn First Big Ten Win of 2024, Beat Huskers 2-0 In Home Season Finale

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland women's soccer defeated Nebraska, 2-0, in its home season finale at Ludwig Field on Oct. 13. The win was Maryland's (4-8-4, 1-6-1 Big Ten) first Big Ten Conference victory of the 2024 season and first since defeating Purdue, 3-1, on Oct. 23 to close out the 2022 season. It was also the Terps's first win in program history over the Huskers (4-9-1, 1-6-1 Big Ten).

Delaney DeMartino scored her third goal of the season in the 41st minute to break the stalemate. She received a nice entry pass to the box from Katie Coyle and headed the ball into the low left side of the net.

The goal tied her with Kennedy Bell for the team lead in goals, and Kelsey Smith and Coyle each earned their first career assists. The score was also Maryland's first in the Big Ten since scoring three times in the 2022 Purdue game.

Coyle extended Maryland's lead in the 77th minute, with Smith finding her with a nice underneath pass to put the ball right past the goalkeeper on the right side. The score was her second of the season. Smith earned her second assist of the game.

Maryland's defense, led by Coyle, Halle Johnson, Taryn Raibon and Tahirah Turnage-Morales, helped goalkeeper Liz Beardsley pitch her fifth shutout of the season. Beardsley made two saves to increase her season total to 61, ranking second in the Big Ten Conference. Beardsley now has 11 blank sheets to her name, claiming sole possession of ninth place in program history after breaking a tie with Cailin Mullins (1990-93).

The win was also interim coach Michael Marchiano's first victory with the Terps as their head man.
Maryland wore pink jerseys during the match in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

DeMartino's Take On Her Goal
"When Coyle played that ball over, I just acted how I had to act and finished the ball. We ran over to the corner and hugged. We were just all so excited, it wasn't all about me it was about this team so it was great."

Coyle's Take On Scoring The Second Goal and First Big Ten Win
"When the ball finally went in the back of the net, I think we were all kind of relieved. On the second goal, it was the same thing. I'm not really thinking about whether we've never scored a goal or won a Big Ten game since I've been here. It's just everyone focused on playing the game, and the results came from the focus."

Marchiano's Thoughts On The Victory
"It's a cool day for the girls, really happy to get the win," interim head coach Michael Marchiano said. "I think a lot of us know what's been going on in and around our program, and it's a big day for the girls to get three points, a win and to score the goals."
