Freshmen Lead No. 5 Terps Past No. 10 Hawkeyes, 5-0

IOWA CITY, IA – Led by freshmen Ella Gaitan and Annemijn Klijnhout, No. 5 Maryland handed No. 10 Iowa their first home loss, 5-0, at Grant Field on Sunday. The Terps (7-3, 3-1 B1G) earned their fourth ranked win and second over a top-10 team in 2024.  

Maryland claimed its largest margin of victory over Iowa across their 28 all-time match-ups. Five goals is also the most goals the Terps have ever scored against the Hawkeyes. 

Gaitan scored her second and third career goals, both coming off Maryland penalty corners. Hope Rose had her first assist of the season on Gaitan's first goal, a skillful redirection of Rose's powerful strike. Josie Hollamon notched her second assist of the season on Gaitan's second score, which was Maryland's third score of the game. 
 
Klijnhout secured the first goal of her career for Maryland's second score of the game. Alina Gerke was credited with the assist, which was her second assist of the season. 
 
Maci Bradford tacked on another Terps score in the fourth quarter for her second goal of the season. Kylee Niswonger earned her first assist of the season on the insurance goal. 


Rose joined the goal-scoring party late in the fourth with her team-leading fifth of the season. She has scored in each of her last two games after scoring twice against Indiana. 

Goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko made three saves and earned her fourth shutout of the season. She also has shutouts in back-to-back games after defeating Indiana 3-0 on Friday. Through 10 games, the sophomore has 26 saves. Maryland's lockdown back line of Rayne Wright, Ericka Morris-Adams and Josie Hollamon.

The Hawkeyes (6-4, 1-3 B1G) were 4-0 in Iowa City entering the match. 
 
Breaking Down The Action
  • Alyssa Klebasko made her first save of the afternoon on a shot off a penalty corner at 6:23.  
  • Maryland could not convert on their first quarter penalty corner opportunity. The game was scoreless going into the second quarter. 
  • The Terps scored in the opening minutes of the second quarter, capitalizing on their second penalty corner of the game. Hope Rose assisted with a strike that was redirected by Ella Gaitain for the score. Emma DeBerdine inbounded the penalty corner. 
  • Maryland earned four penalty corners in one minute midway through the second quarter, but the score held at 1-0. 
  • Klebasko kneed away a Hawkeyes shot attempt in the closing minutes of the second quarter. 
  • Annemijn Klijnhout put one past the Hawkeyes goalkeeper in the third quarter to extend Maryland's lead. Alina Gerke had the assist with a well-placed pass in the circle. 
  • Klebasko made another key save midway through the third quarter to hold Maryland's advantage. 
  • Gaitan scored again in the latter half of the third quarter, converting on Maryland's penalty corner opportunity. Josie Hollamon controlled the inbound pass and passed to Gaitan, who lifted it to the top left corner of the goal.
  • Klebasko kicked away an Iowa shot attempt in the last minute of the third quarter. 
  • Maci Bradford scored the Terps' fourth goal of the game after controlling Kylee Niswonger's assist and shooting straight on the Iowa goal. 
  • Rose rolled in an unassisted goal off a fast break in the closing minutes of the fourth period for Maryland's fifth score of the game.

  • The Terps last defeated the Hawkeyes in last season's Big Ten tournament in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Maryland beat Iowa 2-0 in that game.
