Second-Half Surge Leads No. 7 Maryland Past No. 17 Penn State, 4-2

STATE COLLEGE, PA – No. 7 Maryland scored three second-half goals to defeat No. 17 Penn State, 4-2, to conclude the 2024 regular season on Friday at Bedford Field. The win was Maryland's sixth ranked victory of the 2024 campaign. 

With the win, the Terps clinched the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and moved to 12-5 on the season and 6-2 in conference play. They will host the tournament as they play the No. 7 seed Iowa Hawkeyes in the quarterfinals on Nov. 7. The game is at 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on Big Ten Network. 

Tied at 1-1, Annemijn Klijnhout scored the go-ahead goal 37 seconds into the second half. It was her second of the season, and Kylee Niswonger recorded the assist, her fourth of the season. 
  Less than three minutes later, Maci Bradford found Hope Rose to give Maryland a two-score lead. Rose then scored another goal at 2:25 in the third. She now has a team-leading 11 goals this season and goals in four straight games. After recording her ninth career multi-goal game, she also scored five goals in her last four games. Bradford earned her third of the season on Rose's first goal.   
  Rose found Ella Gaitan for the game's opening goal at 11:34 in the first quarter. The goal was the freshman's eighth of the season, ranking second on the team behind Rose's 11 scores. Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko collected four saves in the match.

With the loss, Penn State (8-9, 2-6 Big Ten) was eliminated from the Big Ten Tournament. Sophia Gladieux scored the equalizer at 10:25 in the second and Sophia Mannino scored with under one minute remaining in the game.

  • The Nittany Lions fired their first shot 45 seconds into the game, but Alyssa Klebasko made the save. 
  • The Terps took their first penalty corner 3:10 into the game. Hope Rose got a shot off but it was blocked. 
  • She gained control of the rebound and found Ella Gaitan for a goal. The Terps led 1-0 at 11:34 in the first. 
  • Maryland took another penalty corner three minutes later, but Rose's shot was blocked. 
  • Penn State earned its first short corner at 10:25 in the second. Sophia Gladieux fired a laser to the back of the goal to tie the game at 1-1. 
  • A little over two minutes later, the Nittany Lions fired another shot that was blocked.  
  • Gladieux got off another shot with 15-second raiming, and Klebasklo made the save to enter halftime tied at one apiece. 
  • The Terps broke the tie 37 seconds into the second half with a goal by Annemijn Klijnhout. Kylee Niswonger earned the assist.
  • Maryland extended its lead to 3-1 less than three minutes later with a goal by Rose, assisted by Maci Bradford.
  • Rose scored her second goal of the game at 2:25 into the third, giving Maryland a commanding 4-1 advantage.
  • The Terps remained in control for the rest of the contest, although Sophia Mannino scored with less than a minute remaining to cut the deficit to 4-2.
