COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 5 Maryland earned its 36th overall NCAA Tournament bid Sunday night. The Terrapins are the No. 5 overall seed and will take on No. 6 Duke (12-6) Friday in the NCAA First Round at the Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Terps will face off against the Blue Devils at 1:30 p.m on ESPN+.

  • The Terps' offense has been fueled by senior Hope Rose and freshman Ella Gaitan. Rose leads the team with 26 points and 12 goals this season, scoring a goal in the last five out of six games. Gaitan has won three Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors and has eight goals this season. Rose would finish the regular season ranked fifth in the Big Ten in goals and Gaitan would finish eighth in the conference.  
  • On the defensive side, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Josie Hollamon has played a key role, adding five goals this season and leads the team lead with six assists. 
  • In goal, sophomore Alyssa Klebasko has been dominant, ranking third in the Big Ten and seventh nationally in goals-against-average (1.00). She also ranks third in the conference with six shutouts this season.
  • Duke earns its 20th bid to the NCAA Tournament and second consecutive. Traveling to Chapel Hill for the seventh time, the Blue Devils are 4-6 when playing at North Carolina. Overall, Duke is 15-4 in first-round games and 7-8 in quarterfinal action.
  • The Blue Devils will face Maryland for the sixth time in NCAA Championship history and the second time this season. In their last meeting, Duke narrowly defeated the Terrapins 1-0 at the annual ACC/B1G Cup. In NCAA tournament play, Duke holds a 2-3 record against Maryland, with their most recent matchup in the 2017 quarterfinals. Friday's game marks the first time the teams will meet in the opening round.
  • Duke enters the NCAA tournament with a 12-6 record, backed by one of the nation's top defenses. Led by All-ACC second-team goalkeeper Frederique Wollaert, who boasts a 0.57 goals against average—the lowest in Duke single-season history and third nationally—the Blue Devils have a team goals against average of 0.63, ranking second in the ACC and third in the nation.
  • On offense, Duke is powered by two-time All-ACC first-team forward Alaina McVeigh, who has 13 goals and two assists. All-ACC first-team midfielder Charlie van Oirschot has contributed four goals and five assists, while eight different Blue Devils have scored at least twice this season. All-ACC second-team player Kira Curland has made an impact both offensively, with two goals and four assists, and defensively as a key part of the penalty corner unit.
  • Maryland is 34-14-3 all-time against Duke.  The Terps would fall to Duke this season 1-0 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

  • Entering a shootout with both teams scoreless, No. 2 seed Maryland defeated No. 7 seed Iowa, 1-0, on Thursday in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. 
  • Hope RoseMaci Bradford and Annemijn Klijnhout made their penalty shots, and backup goalkeeper Paige Kieft made a key save to allow the Terps to advance. The last time they won in a shootout was on Nov. 13, 2022, when the Terps downed No. 8 Syracuse to earn a trip to the Final Four. 
  • Alyssa Klebasko made five saves in regulation and recorded her sixth shutout of the season, marking a new season-best after claiming five blank sheets during her freshman season.
  • Maryland's defense, led by Ericka Morris-AdamsJosie Hollamon, and Rayne Wright, significantly contributed to holding the Hawkeyes scoreless. They regularly cut off passing and shooting lanes and helped hold Iowa to just five shots on goal. The Terps overwhelmingly led in shots (31-7) and corners (10-3).  
  • No. 2 seed Maryland field hockey was defeated by No. 3 seed Michigan, 4-3, in a shootout during the Big Ten Tournament Semifinal round on Friday.
  • The Wolverines scored twice in the remaining 16 minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime. Both teams made incredible defensive plays throughout both overtime periods, sending the game to a shootout. 
  • Ella Gaitan and Hope Rose scored in the second and third quarters, respectively. Gaitan's was the ninth of her freshman season and was a go-ahead score after being tied at 1-1. Rose's was her team-leading 12th goal for the Terps, assisted by Annemijn KlijnhoutMaci Bradford scored the Terps' first goal at 1:17 in the first quarter. It was her fourth of the season. On her birthday, goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko made a season-high seven saves.

  • Senior Hope Rose has been a tremendous asset to the Maryland Field Hockey team throughout her four years.
  • Rose was honored as the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week, marking the second time she has received this recognition in her career. The announcement came from the conference on Monday.
  • In Maryland's 4-2 road win over #17 Penn State, Rose scored twice and added an assist in the first quarter, extending her scoring streak to four games and bringing her season total to a team-leading 11 goals.
  • A three-time NFHCA All-American, Rose earned All-Big Ten First Team honors last season. Heading into her senior year, she was named one of the Big Ten's 2024 Players to Watch.
  • This past summer, Rose captained the USA U-21 Women's National Team in the Junior Pan American Championships, helping lead the team to a silver medal. 
  • Two weeks ago, she celebrated a milestone 100th career point in Maryland's 4-1 victory over American. Over the last eight games, Rose has scored in six, showcasing her consistency and skill. From the moment she arrived on campus, Rose's impact was undeniable. 
  • She scored 10 goals with four assists as a freshman, earning her the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award in 2021.

Klebasko's cage
  • Sophomore Alyssa Klebasko is continuing her dominance in the cage coming off of a stellar freshman year.
  • The 2023 Big Ten All-Second Team goalie is currently ranking third in the Big Ten and seventh nationally in goals-against-average (1.00). She also ranks sixth in the conference in save percentage this season.  
  • Through 18 games, Klebasko has 52 saves and six shutouts.

Terps bring home big awards
  • Eight members of Maryland's No. 5-ranked field hockey team earned All-Big Ten honors, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. Honorees include Hope Rose, Rayne Wright, Alyssa Klebasko, Josie Hollamon, Emma DeBerdine, Kylee Niswonger, Ella Gaitan, and Annemijn Klijnhout.
  • Josie Hollamon was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. A staple on defense, Hollamon started every game, shutting down top offensive players nationwide, and contributing offensively with five goals and five assists. Hollamon also earns All-Big Ten First Team honors for the first team in her career.
  • Hope Rose, Emma DeBerdine, and Josie Hollamon were all named to the All-Big Ten First Team. This marks Rose's second First Team selection. She was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career this past week and has led the Terps in scoring with 11 goals and two assists in 17 games. A three-time NFHCA All-American, Rose earned First Team honors last season and was recognized as a Big Ten Player to Watch before the season.
  • Alyssa Klebasko, Ella Gaitan, Annemijn Klijnhout and Rayne Wright each earned All-Big Ten Second Team. Klebasko, a sophomore goalkeeper, has started in the majority of games for the Terps and earned All-Big Ten Second Teams last year as a freshman. She ranks third in the conference in goals-against average (.960).
  • Freshman Annemijn Klijnhout has provided a spark to the Maryland offense this season.  The freshman has started in all 17 games this season scoring two goals and one assist.  Klijnhout joined the Terps from Driebergen-Rijssenburg, The Netherlands after gaining impressive experience for multiple clubs.
  • Rayne Wright, has been an irreplaceable member of the Terps' back line all year. Last season, Wright was named to the All-Big Ten First Team for the first time in her career. Starting in 16 games, Wright helped shutdown some of the nation's best offensive players across the Big Ten and in highly ranked non-conference opponents.
  • Ella Gaitan and Annemijn Klijnhout were also named to the inaugural All-Big Ten Freshman Team.  
  • Kylee Niswonger rounds out the conference honors for Maryland receiving the Big Ten's Sportsmanship Award for the first time in her career. Niswonger, a team captain, has scored four goals in 17 games, including her first career hat trick against Lock Haven.
