NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional On Tap For Cross Country

Terps head to Penn State on Friday for 12 PM start.

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The Maryland cross country teams returns to action this Friday at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals hosted by Penn State. The 6K race is set for a 12 PM start on PSU's Blue & White Course. This will be the second time this season the Terps have run the course after competing earlier this Fall in the Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 13.

  • After finishing first and second in Maryland's season-opening race at the Salisbury Fall Classic, Rose Coats and Eva Rogers were named the Big Ten Runner and Freshman of the Week, respectively.
  • Coats, a sophomore from Brooklyn, NY, guided Maryland to a first-place team finish as she led the field of 116 runners with a time of 20:22.3. It was the first individual win of her career after having a pair of top-three finishes as a freshman in 2023. The time was also a personal best for the sophomore in a 6K race. She finished 37 seconds ahead of second place and 44 seconds ahead of third with an average mile time of 5:27.8.
  • Rogers, a native of Odenton, MD, placed second overall in her first collegiate race with a time of 20:59.2. She averaged 5:37.7 per mile which was just 10 seconds behind Coats.

Maryland Among Top In Mid-Atlantic Regional Poll
  • The Maryland cross country team earned a No. 8 ranking in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Preseason Poll.
  • The Terps moved up a spot to No. 7 in the region after the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational.
  • After two weeks off, the Terps moved back to No. 8 in the region heading into the Paul Short Invitational.
  • Following another break between the Paul Short Invite and the Princeton Fall Classic, Maryland dropped to No. 12 in the region.
  • The Terps again moved up, five spots this time, to No. 7 in the region in the Oct. 21 poll.
  • In the Nov. 4 poll, Maryland dropped one spot to No. 8 in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Terps win Salisbury fall classic
  • A 1-2-3 sweep paced Maryland in its opening race of the year as the Terps took the team title at the Salisbury Fall Classic on Saturday, August 31st at Winter Place Park. Rose Coats was the first to cross the finish line followed by Eva Rogers and Katie Turk.
  • Maryland finished the race with a top score of 24 points followed by Johns Hopkins (53) and Seton Hall (85).
  • Along with the top trio, Katie Altieri finished seventh as the fourth runner among the top 10 for Maryland.

Record-Setting Rose
  • Maryland's Rose Coats has led the Terps this season overall and turned in top-15 finishes at three of the larger regular-season races of the year. She finished 14th overall to lead Maryland at both the Spiked Shoe Invitational hosted by Penn State and the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh. At the Princeton Fall Classic, she set a school record with the first sub-20 minute 6K performance clocking 19:59.9.
  • Coats enters the Big Ten Championship ranked 6th among all Big Ten runners this season with her performance at the Princeton meet. The top 10 finishers at the Big Ten Championship will earn All-Big Ten First Team Honors, while finishers 11-20 will be recognized as second team honorees.
  • As a team, Maryland placed 8th out of 17 with 242 points at the Spiked Shoe Invitational. Event host Penn State took the top score with 42 points followed by Syracuse (62) and Princeton (78).
  • Among the other top five finishers for the Terps were Katie Turk (36), Eva Rogers (47), Katie Altieri (75), and Rubie Goffena (119).
  • Coats the placed 14th among 371 total runners at the Paul Short Invitational on Oct. 5. Her time of 20:24.2 was just two seconds shy of her 6K personal best mark.

Keep An Eye On Altieri
  • Heading into the start of the 2024 cross country season, the Big Ten announced its Runners To Watch for the year with Katie Altieri chosen as one of the top performers in the league.
  • Altieri has been one of the top distance runners for the Terps throughout her career. Last year during the cross country campaign, she had a pair of top-five finishes with fourth-place showings at the Baltimore Metro Meet and the Navy Cross Country Invitational.
  • At the Salisbury Fall Classic, Altieri finished in the top 10, helping the Terps bring home the win to open the season.
