Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Terps Cruise Past Canisius, 108-37

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland men's basketball easily handled Canisius, 108-37, on Tuesday at XFINITY Center. The Terps improved to 4-1, with all of their wins coming by a margin of victory greater than 30 points. Maryland has won 19 consecutive games against unranked non-conference foes heading into the Canisius game.

Seven Terps scored in double-figures, led by Julian Reese's 20 points. It was the first time since Dec. 23, 1995, that Maryland had that many players score 10 or more. Selton Miguel (15 points), Rodney Rice (13 points), Jay Young (12 points), Derik Queen (10 points), Ja'Kobi Gillespie (10 points) and Malachi Palmer (10 points).

In winning by 71 points, it was Maryland's second largest margin of victory in program history. It is the largest victory since beating North Texas by a school-record 75 points on Dec. 23, 1998.

Maryland's 108 points are its most since scoring 111 against Farleigh Dickinson on Nov. 18, 2005. In allowing only 37, Maryland gave up its fewest points since beating American University of Puerto Rico, 82-32 on Nov. 26, 1998.

After the Golden Griffins scored the first bucket of the game on a deep 3-pointer to beat the shot clock, the Terps outscored them 59-11 the rest of the first half and continued pouring in buckets in the second half. In leading 59-14 at the half, Maryland scored its most points in a first half since leading Clemson 59-56 on Jan. 2, 2001. Also, in leading by 45 points at halftime, Maryland had its largest margin this century since leading Chicago State by 39 (62-23) at halftime on Dec. 27, 2000.
Through Maryland's first five games, it has a +162 margin of victory. That is the Terps' largest margin of victory through their first five games since 1998-99 when they boasted a 209 margin of victory.

Reese posted the 23rd double-double of his career, adding 12 rebounds to his performance. Since 2010-11, Reese has had the fourth-most double-doubles of any Terp. It was also his second 20-point performance of the season.

This was Maryland's 115th 100-point game and the third under head coach Kevin Willard. Canisius is now 0-6 on the season.

Willard's Take
"I thought Julian set the whole tempo with us," head coach Kevin Willard said. "We threw it in. He didn't rush it. He kicked it out. We got a wide-open three, even though we didn't make it. I really thought that set the tone because I was on a team when we watched film on Sunday about getting the basketball in to Julian Reese, and so for me to make a conscious effort to throw it in the first possession, and then for him to kick it back out after he didn't that many touches, I just thought he set the tone of being unselfish."
