Eight Terps Collect All-Big Ten Honors

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Eight members of Maryland's No. 5-ranked field hockey team earned All-Big Ten honors, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. Honorees include Hope Rose, Rayne Wright, Alyssa Klebasko, Josie Hollamon, Emma DeBerdine, Kylee Niswonger, Ella Gaitan, and Annemijn Klijnhout.

Josie Hollamon was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. A staple on defense, Hollamon started every game, shutting down top offensive players nationwide, and contributing offensively with five goals and five assists. Hollamon also earns All-Big Ten First Team honors for the first team in her career.

Hope Rose, Emma DeBerdine, and Josie Hollamon were all named to the All-Big Ten First Team. This marks Rose's second First Team selection. She was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career this past week and has led the Terps in scoring with 11 goals and two assists in 17 games. A three-time NFHCA All-American, Rose earned First Team honors last season and was recognized as a Big Ten Player to Watch before the season.

Emma DeBerdine returned to College Park for her final year of eligibility after representing the United States in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. DeBerdine earned All-Big Ten First Team honors for the third time in her career. The Lancaster, Pennsylvania native, has started in 92 of the 93 games she played in, tallying 74 points from 23 goals and 28 assists. DeBerdine has multiple accolades during her undergraduate career, including two NFHCA All-American honors and now three All-Big Ten recognitions.

Alyssa Klebasko, Ella Gaitan, Annemijn Klijnhout and Rayne Wright each earned All-Big Ten Second Team. Klebasko, a sophomore goalkeeper, has started in the majority of games for the Terps and earned All-Big Ten Second Teams last year as a freshman. She ranks third in the conference in goals-against average (.960).

Freshman Ella Gaitan has been a key piece to the Terps offense this year. The freshman has started in all 17 games this year and recorded the game's opening goal in the first quarter to help Maryland defeat No. 17 Penn State 4-2 in the last game of the season. The goal was the freshman's eighth of the season, ranking second on the team behind Rose's 11 scores. She was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week in an announcement by the conference on Monday. This marks the third time this season that Gaitan has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. This past summer, Gaitan was part of the 2024 U.S. U21 National Team.  She helped the USA Field Hockey U21 Women's National Team to the Silver Medal at the 2024 Junior Pan American Championship which was held July 2-12 at Tamanawis Park in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Their strong performance secured the USA a spot in the 2025 FIH Hockey Junior World Cup. Before arriving to Maryland, Gaitan was recognized as one of the national's top prospects, being named a 2022 Max Field Hockey Top 50 Player for the 2024 Class.  Her standout high school career earned her several honors in 2021, including MAX Field Hockey Second Team All-New Jersey Region, First Team MAPL, and NJISA Prep "A" All-State First Team.

Freshman Annemijn Klijnhout has provided a spark to the Maryland offense this season.  The freshman has started in all 17 games this season scoring two goals and one assist.  Klijnhout joined the Terps from Driebergen-Rijssenburg, The Netherlands after gaining impressive experience for multiple clubs. Klijnhout has served as a team captain for four years and was named the best player at the NK indoor tournament. The midfielder has earned a place on multiple Dutch youth selection teams, including district northwest U-14, Dutch B U-16 and Dutch U-18.

Rayne Wright, has been an irreplaceable member of the Terps' back line all year. Last season, Wright was named to the All-Big Ten First Team for the first time in her career. Starting in 16 games, Wright helped shutdown some of the nation's best offensive players across the Big Ten and in highly ranked non-conference opponents.

Ella Gaitan and Annemijn Klijnhout were also named to the inaugural All-Big Ten Freshman Team.

Kylee Niswonger rounds out the conference honors for Maryland receiving the Big Ten's Sportsmanship Award for the first time in her career. Niswonger, a team captain, has scored four goals in 17 games, including her first career hat trick against Lock Haven.

Maryland field hockey returns to action as they begin their pursuit of a third Big Ten Tournament Championship. The Terps will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 Iowa on Thursday, November 7 at 2 p.m. on Big Ten Plus.
