Terps Edged By Wolverines In Conference Semifinal Shootout, 4-3

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 2 seed Maryland field hockey was defeated by No. 3 seed Michigan, 4-3, in a shootout during the Big Ten Tournament Semifinal round on Friday at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. 

The No. 5 ranked Terps (13-6) await their NCAA Tournament fate. The selection show will take place on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 10 p.m. EST. 

Maryland could not score in the shootout as Michigan scored twice to clinch the win. The Wolverines scored twice in the remaining 16 minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime. Both teams made incredible defensive plays throughout both overtime periods, sending the game to a shootout. 

Ella Gaitan and Hope Rose scored in the second and third quarters, respectively. Gaitan's was the ninth of her freshman season and was a go-ahead score after being tied at 1-1. Rose's was her team-leading 12th goal for the Terps, assisted by Annemijn Klijnhout. Maci Bradford scored the Terps' first goal at 1:17 in the first quarter. It was her fourth of the season. On her birthday, goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko made a season-high seven saves.
  No. 13-ranked Michigan (14-4) advanced to the Big Ten Tournament championship game.


Breaking Down The Action
  • Fleur Knopert intercepted a pass and put the game's first shot on goal seven minutes into the game, but it went wide. 
  • Maci Bradford gained control of a second chance opportunity in front of the cage and found the back of the net at 1:17 in the first period. The Terps took an early 1-0 advantage. 
  • Kylee Niswonger fired a shot on goal that Michigan goalkeeper Hala Silverstein kicked away four minutes into the second frame. 
  • The Wolverines earned the game's first penalty corner at 7:22 in the second, but back-to-back opportunities were deflected. 
  • Michigan earned its third penalty corner and converted at 2:32 to tie the game at 1-1. Pilar Oliveros was awarded the score. 
  • Ella Gaitan quickly responded with a goal at 1:50 on a penalty corner, and the Terps re-took the lead, 2-1. 
  • Annemijn Klijnhout found Hope Rose for a goal late in the third to give Maryland a 3-1 advantage. The sequence was converted on a clean give-and-go.  
  • Michigan got the goal back from Lora Clarke with 59 seconds left in the quarter, but the Terps still led 3-2. 
  • The Wolverines pulled their goalie with five minutes to play in the game. With 3:41 to go, they had a chance to tie the game on a penalty corner. The ball hit the back of the net, but the score was called off because of a foul. 
  • A penalty corner with 14 seconds in the game led to Michigan tying the game with four seconds on the clock. The goal was scored by Juliette Manzur, who snuck the ball just over Klebasko's head. 
  • In the first and second overtimes, many game-saving defensive plays were made, eventually sending the game to a shootout.
