Terps Fall Behind Early, Lose 9-3 To Southeast Missouri

Box Score HAMMOND, LA – Maryland softball wrapped up its play at the Lion Classic, losing to Southeast Missouri, 9-3, on Sunday. 

Maryland (3-7) went down 3-0 in the third inning and was never able to bridge the gap. Southeast Missouri added six insurance runs the rest of the game as Maryland continued to play from behind. 

Mazie MacFarlane hit a two-RBI double late for Maryland's first extra-base hit. However, the game was already out of reach. The Terps' other two hits came from Madison Runyan and Jaeda McFarland

Southeast Missouri (4-6) had seven different players cross home plate. Sophie Schupp went 2-for-2 with an RBI single and a run. Aubrie Shore finished with a game-high three RBIs. 

The Terps previously run-ruled the Redhawks 9-1 on Friday to begin their play in Louisiana.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland allowed two runners in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the second inning. The Terps struck out one batter, but Southeast Missouri singled through the right side to bring one runner home. They managed to get the second runner out at the plate and escaped the inning allowing one run. 
  • The Terps surrendered two more runs in the third inning following a passed ball and RBI single, giving Southeast Missouri a 3-0 lead early. 
  • Maryland had back-to-back baserunners to start the fourth inning as Megan Mikami walked and Jaeda McFarland hit an infield single. The Terps broke the score column with a Sydney Lewis sacrifice fly that scored Mikami from third. 
  • Southeast Missouri loaded up the bases in the fourth inning and scored two runs on walks. The Redhawks continued their big inning with two more runs via a sacrifice fly and a crucial throwing error to cap off a 4-run inning for Southeast Missouri
  • Mazie McFarlane and Michaela Jones got into scoring position with two outs for Maryland in fifth, but the Terps couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. Southeast Missouri remained on top 7-1 going into the bottom half of the fifth  
  • Maryland loaded the bases with two walks and an error in the sixth. Mazie MacFarlane's two-run double scored Bailey Murphy and Caitlyn Cornwell for the Terps' second and third runs of the afternoon.
  • Two more runs came across in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 9-3 heading into the final inning. Southeast Missouri closed out the game with a 1-2-3 inning.

  • 4: Madison Runyan recorded a hit in all four games in the tournament.
