Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – Florida's Emily Heller scored in overtime to cap a comeback for the Gators in handing No. 5 Maryland its first loss of the season, 13-12, on Saturday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terps led by as many as five goals on several occasions before Florida rallied to tie the game with 20.9 seconds in regulation before winning it in the extra session.
Maryland (3-1) scored six unanswered goals to enter halftime and held Florida (1-2) scoreless for 26 minutes during the run overall, leading 7-2 at intermission. However, the Gators scored seven goals in the third quarter and eventually tied the game.
Eloise Clevenger scored seven points which was a game-high. She notched three goals and four assists and she has scored three or more goals and assists in back-to-back games.
Kori Edmondson scored two goals and May added two goals and one assist.
Emily Sterling anchored the backend of Maryland's defense at goalie. She saved 11 shots.
The Terps sparked their run after adjusting with Hailey Russo on draws. She took five draw controls in the game and added a goal.
Shannon Smith took over on draws in the second half and also had success. She also took five draw controls.
Florida has played three top-10 teams to begin the season. Paisley Eagan scored four goals and Madison Waters each scored a hat trick.
Breaking Down The Action
- Florida scored forced and each team traded a pair of goals for the first eight minutes to tie the score at 2-2. The goals came from Hailey Russo (unassisted) and Maisy Clevenger on a feed from her sister Eloise Clevenger. However, the Terps scored four straight goals to end the first quarter, including a second from E. Clevenger with three seconds on the clock to take a 5-2 lead.
- Maryland added two more goals to stretch the lead to 7-2 at halftime. Both goals were scored by Kori Edmondson and the Terps held the Gators scoreless for 23:48 entering the half.
- The Gators rallied a comeback by scoring seven goals in the third quarter to the Terps' three. Hannah Leubecker and Victoria Hensh scored their firsts and M. Clevenger scored her second. Maryland still led 10-9 entering the final 15 minutes.
- Florida tied the game at 11-11 with 8:41 to play with a goal by Maggi Hall. Maryland reclaimed the lead with Libby May's second goal of the game, but Paisley Eagan scored with 20 seconds remaining to force overtime. It was her fourth goal of the game.
- Tied at 12-12 in overtime, Emily Heller scored the game-winner.
Hat Trick Terps
- Eloise Clevenger notched a hat trick with three goals to go along with four assists. It was the 10th hat trick of her career and her second game in a row accomplishing the feat.
- She was the fourth Terp to score three goals in a game this season after Hannah Leubecker and Kori Edmondson did in their overtime win against No. 5 Syracuse and Clevenger recorded three goals and three assists in Maryland's last win against Drexel.
Multi Terps Update
- Eloise Clevenger (three goals and four assists) had the 37th multi-point game of her career. It was her 24th career game with multiple assists and her 13th career game with multiple goals. It was also her 16th career game with three assists.
- Libby May (two goals and one assist) recorded the 55th multi-point game of her career. It was also her 50th multi-goal game.
- Kori Edmondson (two goals) has recorded multiple points in 15 games in her career and scored multiple goals in all of them.
- Maisy Clevenger (two goals) had the second multi-point game of her career. It was her first game with multiple goals.
Terps On The Charts
- Shaylan Ahearn is third in program history with 339 draw controls. She added to her total with one on Saturday. Next on the list is Kali Hartshorn (2017-20), who had 421 in her career.
- Emily Sterling is fifth in career saves after her 11 in the game. She now has 535 in her career and is also only 16 from passing Kim Chorosiewski (1985-88).
- Eloise Clevenger moved up on the all-time assists list. She had four in the game and has 98 in her career, which is ninth in program history. She's just four away from passing Kelly Kasper (2005-08) and claiming the eighth spot.
- Libby May and Hannah Leubecker are No. 13 and 14 respectively on the career goals list. May has 174 and Leubecker has 170 Both are nearing Zoe Stukenberg's (2014-17) position at 12th on the list with 175 goals.
