Maryland Meets Mount St. Mary's For Road Midweek Battle

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The Terrapins continue their seven game road trip as they face Mount St. Mary's. This is the second and final meeting between the two programs, with the first game earlier this season being the first home victory for new head coach Matt Swope. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and will air on the Maryland Baseball Network. First pitch for the game will be at 3 p.m.

Maryland took two of three on the road against the Charlotte 49ers this past weekend. Maryland dropped the first game of the series 9-5 on March 8. The Terrapins fell behind early, but continued to battle throughout. The highlight of the game for the Terps came in the sixth inning when freshman Jordan Crosland hit his first collegiate home run. The two teams played a doubleheader on Sunday, with the Terps taking both games to win the series. In game one of the doubleheader, hitting five home runs in a 13-2 win. The second game was a low-scoring pitcher's duel. The Terps took an early 1-0 lead, but Charlotte would score two runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Logan Berrier would come on in relief and keep the Terrapins within a run, striking out five batters across his four inning outing. In the sixth, Kevin Keister took an 0-1 pitch and hit it just over the head of the right fielder, tying the game at two apiece. Elijah Lambros came up next and ripped a single into center field to score Keister to give the Terps a 3-2 lead. Berrier would strike out consecutive hitters to finish the seven-inning game. The win for the Terrapins secured them their 14th consecutive series win. The Terps won 11 straight weekend series during 2023, and have won their first three of the 2024 campaign.

The Terrapins and the Mountaineers have faced each other on 16 occasions, including once this season. The Terps got the win in the game, winning their home opener 14-3. The Terps lead the all-time series 13-3, with the win on Feb. 20 being the first meeting between the two teams in almost 10 years. six-run in the first and eighth innings broke the game open and helped lead the Terrapins to the victory.

Mount St. Mary's (1-10-1) enter the week after a weekend series against Lehigh. Mount St. Mary's and Lehigh played a double header on Friday, with Lehigh taking game one 3-2. Game two of the doubleheader was an offensive battle, with both teams tied at 10 apiece through nine innings. Just before the game could go to extra innings, the game was called due to darkness and ended in a tie. The final game of the series was cancelled due to weather. On offense the Mountaineers are led by JT Landwehr who has a .324 average through 12 games. Aiden Tierney leads the team with 11 RBI and is tied with five other players for the team lead in home runs with one. Kyle Speas leads the pitching staff with a 2.36 ERA through 13.2 innings, while Deven Sheerin leads the team with 27 strikeouts.

Series Win Streak
  • Maryland won all eight of its Big Ten regular-season series in 2023, continuing a streak of 22 consecutive Big Ten series wins. The Terps have won all eight of their Big Ten series in back-to-back seasons and have not lost a conference set since April 2021.
  • The Terps have not lost a regular season Big Ten series series since April 9-11, 2021, when the Terps dropped 2-of-3 at Nebraska. The Terps last split a Big Ten series was at Iowa back on April 23-24, which is the lone series in its run that didn't result in a series victory.
  • With the Terps doubleheader win over Charlotte on March 10, they have now won 14 consecutive weekend series. The Terps won 11 straight in 2023, and have won their first three of the 2024 season. The last weekend series loss for the Terps came last season during a road series against Ole Miss from Feb. 24-26.

Breaking Out the Power Bats
  • In Maryland's 13-2 win over Charlotte, the team hit five home runs. The Terps had their first game with five-plus home runs since a seven home run performance April, 26, 2023 against Georgetown. This marks the fourth consecutive year when the Terrapins have hit five or more home runs in a game.
  • Freshman Chris Hacopian hit two home runs in the game, capturing the first two-homer game for the Terps since Matt Woods on May 13, 2023 against Minnesota. The first home run came on a solo shot in the second inning and the second was a three-run home run in the eighth. Chris is currently tied for the team lead in home runs with four.
  • The trio of Elijah Lambros, Eddie Hacopian, and Alex Calarco each hit a home run in the contest. For Calarco, he is tied with Chris Hacopian for the team lead with four, while the home runs for Lambros and Eddie were their first of the season.

Save One for Me
  • The Terrapins pitching staff has seven saves to begin the season. That mark is the most in the Big Ten and ranks in the top five nationally. The Terrapins had 19 saves during the 2023 season, but in their first 13 games only had two.
  • Nate Haberthier, Omar Melendez, Trystan Sarcone lead the team with two saves this season, while Duke McCarron has one.
  • Five of the seven saves this season have come with the pitcher going at least three or more innings. Both of Melendez's saves have been for three or more innings, with his second being a four inning save against Delaware on Mar. 5, 2023. This marks the second consecutive year that a Terrapins pitcher has had a four inning save, with Nate Haberthier picking up a four inning save in Maryland's 4-0 win over Albany on Mar. 19, 2023.
  • Both McCarron and Sarcone each have a three inning save. McCarron's three inning save came in Maryland's 14-5 win over Georgetown on Feb. 27, while Sarcone's came in Maryland's 8-3 win over Bryant on March 1. Haberthier picked up a three inning save during Maryland's 13-2 win over Charlotte on March 10.
