COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The Terrapins continue their seven game road trip as they face the Portland Pilots. This is the first meeting between the two teams all-time. The Terps come into the game having won seven of their last eight games. All three games of the series will stream on ESPN+ and air on the Maryland Baseball Network.
Maryland took two of three on the road against the Charlotte 49ers this past weekend. Maryland dropped the first game of the series 9-5 on March 8. The Terrapins fell behind early, but continued to battle throughout. The highlight of the game for the Terps came in the sixth inning when freshman Jordan Crosland hit his first collegiate home run. The two teams played a doubleheader on Sunday, with the Terps taking both games to win the series. In game one of the doubleheader, hitting five home runs in a 13-2 win. The second game was a low-scoring pitcher's duel. The Terps took an early 1-0 lead, but Charlotte would score two runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Logan Berrier would come on in relief and keep the Terrapins within a run, striking out five batters across his four inning outing. In the sixth, Kevin Keister took an 0-1 pitch and hit it just over the head of the right fielder, tying the game at two apiece. Elijah Lambros came up next and ripped a single into center field to score Keister to give the Terps a 3-2 lead. Berrier would strike out consecutive hitters to finish the seven-inning game. The Terrapins got a win over Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday 6-4. Trailing 3-4 going into the ninth inning, the Terps would score three runs to take the lead. Alex Walsh came on in the bottom of the fifth to close the game out and pick up his first collegiate save.
Portland (9-5) is coming off a midweek victory on the road against Oregon. The Pilots dominated the game, scoring 15 runs and clubbing 18 hits in a 15-5 win. Last weekend, Portland faced Creighton and took one of three in the series.Portland dropped the first two games of the series 9-5 and 9-2, before taking the final game on Sunday 6-3. Joey Gartrell went 6.1 innings, striking out eight and only allowing five hits. Brady Bean leads the team with a .357 batting average so far this season. Jonas Salk leads the offense with 14 RBI, and is tied with three other players for the team lead in home runs with three. Carter Gaston leads the pitching staff with a 1.54 ERA and holds a 2-1 record in 11.2 innings. Sam Stuhr leads the team with 32 strikeouts on the year.
Series Win Streak
- Maryland won all eight of its Big Ten regular-season series in 2023, continuing a streak of 22 consecutive Big Ten series wins. The Terps have won all eight of their Big Ten series in back-to-back seasons and have not lost a conference set since April 2021.
- The Terps have not lost a regular season Big Ten series series since April 9-11, 2021, when the Terps dropped 2-of-3 at Nebraska. The Terps last split a Big Ten series was at Iowa back on April 23-24, which is the lone series in its run that didn't result in a series victory.
- With the Terps doubleheader win over Charlotte on March 10, they have now won 14 consecutive weekend series. The Terps won 11 straight in 2023, and have won their first three of the 2024 season. The last weekend series loss for the Terps came last season during a road series against Ole Miss from Feb. 24-26.

Terps Pitching Staff Making Steady Improvements
- The Terrapins pitching staff has improved in year one under new pitching coach Jimmy Jackson. Through 17 games, the Terrapins have a 3.98 ERA, which is the lowest in the Big Ten and ranks in the top 50 in the nation. That is the lowest team ERA for the Terps since the 2017 season, where they finished with the same 3.98 ERA. The lowest ERA for the Terrapins in recent years came in 2016, where the team finished with a staff ERA of 3.80
- The Terrapins have nine players with an ERA under 4.00, led by the duo of Logan Ott and Andrew Johnson who each have a perfect 0.00 ERA. Every member of the starting rotation has an ERA under 3.50. Logan Koester leads the group with a 2.45 ERA through four starts, followed by Kenny Lippman (2.93), Joey McMannis (3.18), and Ryan Van Buren (3.32).
- In the bullpen, key pieces like Logan Berrier (1.72 ERA), Nate Haberthier (3.00), and Alex Walsh (3.00) each give the team effective innings in the back end of games and is further evidence of the strides the team has made under Jackson.

Breaking Out the Power Bats
- In Maryland's 13-2 win over Charlotte, the team hit five home runs. The Terps had their first game with five-plus home runs since a seven home run performance April, 26, 2023 against Georgetown. This marks the fourth consecutive year when the Terrapins have hit five or more home runs in a game.
- Freshman Chris Hacopian hit two home runs in the game, capturing the first two-homer game for the Terps since Matt Woods on May 13, 2023 against Minnesota. The first home run came on a solo shot in the second inning and the second was a three-run home run in the eighth. Chris is currently tied for the team lead in home runs with four.
- The trio of Elijah Lambros, Eddie Hacopian, and Alex Calarco each hit a home run in the contest. For Calarco, he is tied with Chris Hacopian for the team lead with four, while the home runs for Lambros and Eddie were their first of the season.
Chris Hacopian hit two home runs in Maryland's 13-2 win over Charlotte on March 10. Chris captured the first two homer game since matt Woods accomplished the feat on May 13, 2023 against Minnesota. Chris is currently tied for the most home runs on the team with four.
Save One for Me
- The Terrapins pitching staff has eight saves to begin the season. That mark is the most in the Big Ten and ranks in the top five nationally. The Terrapins had 19 saves during the 2023 season, but in their first 13 games only had two.
- Nate Haberthier, Omar Melendez, Trystan Sarcone lead the team with two saves this season, while Duke McCarron and Alex Walsh each have one.
- Five of the eight saves this season have come with the pitcher going at least three or more innings. Both of Melendez's saves have been for three or more innings, with his second being a four inning save against Delaware on Mar. 5, 2023. This marks the second consecutive year that a Terrapins pitcher has had a four inning save, with Nate Haberthier picking up a four inning save in Maryland's 4-0 win over Albany on Mar. 19, 2023.
- Both McCarron and Sarcone each have a three inning save. McCarron's three inning save came in Maryland's 14-5 win over Georgetown on Feb. 27, while Sarcone's came in Maryland's 8-3 win over Bryant on March 1. Haberthier picked up a three inning save during Maryland's 13-2 win over Charlotte on March 10.
Nate Haberthier picked up his second save, giving the Terrapins seven saves on the young season. Five of the seven saves for the Terps this year have come when the pitcher goes three or more innings, including Haberthier's save against Charlotte on Sunday.
