GymTerps Travel to Michigan State for the Big Ten Championships

COLLEGE PARK, MD -  The Maryland gymnastics team will travel to Michigan State to compete in the Big Ten Championship on Saturday afternoon. The meet begins at 12:00 p.m., and fans can watch on Big Ten Plus and follow for more updates @TerpsGymnastics on Twitter. 
 
SETTING THE STAGE
  • Three GymTerps received Big Ten honors this past Wednesday. 
  • Senior Alexa Rothenbuescher, sophomore Madeline Komoroski, and freshman Natalie Martin all earned Second Team All-Big Ten plaudits.  
  • The Terrapins finished second at the Kidney Care Gymnastics Championships last weekend. 
  • The Terps led among all other competitors on vault, scoring a team total of 49.275 for the event. 
  • Junior Josephine Kogler scored a career-high of 9.900 on vault, alongside Martin who scored the same for the event. 
  • Junior Sierra Kondo matched her career-high of 9.925 on bars, the second-highest mark among everyone in the competition on the event. 
  • Both senior Alexa Rothenbuescher and sophomore Madeline Komoroski led the floor for the Terrapins, both with a score of 9.900. 
  • Komoroski also led the GymTerps on beam, scoring a 9.900. 
  • The GymTerps will be competing in the first session of the Big Ten Gymnastics championships on Saturday. 
  • Silberman was named a 2024 AAI Award Nominee, an award that will be presented to the most outstanding collegiate senior female gymnast in the country.

50 Years of Maryland gymnastics
  • In the 2023-24 season, Maryland gymnastics will celebrate its 50th year of competition. 
  • The team's first year of action came in 1973-74, when head coach Patricia Long assembled a roster of seven student-athletes to practice in the annex gym of Cole Field House. Four head coaches and 49 years later, the Terps fielded a roster of 22 gymnasts that competed on the XFINITY Center court during the 2022-23 season.

Brett Nelligan
Brett Nelligan enters his fifteenth season as head coach of the Terrapins in 2023-24. Nelligan became the fourth head coach in program history on May 1, 2009, following the retirement of his father, Bob Nelligan.

  • Through the Fox Family Scholarship Endowment, Andy and Jackie are supplying the Maryland gymnastics program with the necessary financial assistance to ensure student-athletes are equipped to perform at a high level in the classroom and in competition. 
  • Graduate Emma Silberman was the recipient of the Fox Family Scholarship Endowment for four out of the five years it's been in place, read more about the Fox family's gracious gift and its effect on Maryland Gymnastics.
