Maryland Travels To Gainesville For NCAA Regionals

COLLEGE PARK, MD -  The Maryland gymnastics team will travel to Gainesville, Florida to compete in the NCAA Regionals on Friday afternoon. Maryland will face fifth-seeded Utah, No. 12 seed Michigan State and Towson at the Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. The meet begins at 1:00 p.m., and fans can watch on ESPN+ and follow for more updates @TerpsGymnastics on Twitter. Eight teams will compete in Gainesville, split into two four-team sessions. Florida, Georgia, Missouri and the winner of the first round between Clemson and Iowa State will compete in the evening session at 7 p.m. The top two teams in each sessions advance to regional final which will take place at 5 p.m., on April 7. 

The top two teams from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships. In addition, the top all-around competitor and top event specialist from round two at each regional (who is not on a team advancing to nationals) will advance to the national championships. Event specialist qualifiers will only compete in the events they qualified..

 
SETTING THE STAGE
  • The GymTerps finished with a 196.775 in East Lansing at the Big Ten Championships. The mark was their highest team score at the Big Ten Championships in program history. 
  • The Terrapins won the morning session of the Big Ten Championships, beating out Illinois, Nebraska, Penn State, and Rutgers. 
  • Following the morning session, the GymTerps placed 5th overall, marking the highest team finish at the Big Ten Championships in program history. 
  • The GymTerps also posted a 196.790 team NQS following Big Ten's. That is the best Team NQS score in program history heading into an NCAA Championships. 
  • Senior Alexa Rothenbuescher and junior Rhea LeBlanc both finished the bars rotation with a score of 9.900 and earned Big Ten All-Tournament honors.
  • On beam, sophomore Madeline Komoroski scored a 9.875, tied for first among all competitors at the Big Ten Championships. That earned her Big Ten All-Tournament honors. 
  • Rothenbuescher scored a 9.900 with her impressive routine on the floor, making it the 10th time this season that she reached that mark or higher. 
  • Sophomore Taylor Rech and freshman Natalie Martin both led the Terps on vault with matching scores of 9.850. 
  • The GymTerps will face Utah, No.12 Michigan State and Towson in Gainesville. 
  • Maryland gymnastics has now qualified for the last six NCAA Regionals, with the 2020 Championship being canceled due to Covid-19.
  • Senior Alexa Rothenbuescher, sophomore Madeline Komoroski, and freshman Natalie Martin all earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors this past month. 
  • The Terrapins finished second at the Kidney Care Gymnastics Championships. 
  • Senior Emma Silberman was named a 2024 AAI Award Nominee, an award that will be presented to the most outstanding collegiate senior female gymnast in the country. 
  • The Terps opened their conference schedule with a 196.450-195.550 win over Rutgers. 
  • Maryland opened the season against West Chester, tying their best season-opening score in program history with a 196.150.

50 Years of Maryland gymnastics
  • In the 2023-24 season, Maryland gymnastics will celebrate its 50th year of competition. 
  • The team's first year of action came in 1973-74, when head coach Patricia Long assembled a roster of seven student-athletes to practice in the annex gym of Cole Field House. Four head coaches and 49 years later, the Terps fielded a roster of 22 gymnasts that competed on the XFINITY Center court during the 2022-23 season.

Brett Nelligan
Brett Nelligan enters his fifteenth season as head coach of the Terrapins in 2023-24. Nelligan became the fourth head coach in program history on May 1, 2009, following the retirement of his father, Bob Nelligan.

  • Through the Fox Family Scholarship Endowment, Andy and Jackie are supplying the Maryland gymnastics program with the necessary financial assistance to ensure student-athletes are equipped to perform at a high level in the classroom and in competition.

2023 Regionals recap 
  • Maryland has now qualified for the last six NCAA Regionals, with the 2020 Championship being canceled due to Covid-19. 
  • Last year Maryland reach a 196.675 score at the 2023 NCAA Pittsburgh Regional, the team's best-ever NCAA Regional score.
  • The GymTerps finished ninth last year at the NCAA Regional.
