COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Three Terps received All-American honors over the past week.
Ajax Zappitello was named a First Team All-American by both USA Lacrosse Magazine and Inside Lacrosse. He was the lone unanimous All-American per Inside Lacrosse.
Luke Wierman was named an Honorable Mention All-American by both publications while
Eric Spanos earned Honorable Mention All-American honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine.
Zappitello is now a three-time All-American, with this marking his first-ever First Team Honors. The No. 3 overall draft pick in the 2024 PLL Draft, is arguably the top close defenseman in the country and has frequently shut down star attackmen. His 23 caused turnovers lead the team and his 29 groundballs rank second. He currently stands 10th all-time at Maryland in career caused turnovers (71).
Wierman, one of the top faceoff specialists in the country, is also a three-time All-American now. Wierman's 61.3 faceoff win percentage ranks third in the nation and first among NCAA Tournament teams. His 8.38 groundballs per game are sixth in the country. Wierman has won 829 career faceoffs, good for first in program history. He has 448 career groundballs and is just four away from setting that record too.
After breaking onto the scene at the end of the 2023 season, Spanos has had an excellent 2024 campaign for the Terps and earned his first career All-American distinction. He has totaled 23 goals and 11 assists for 34 points, all numbers that rank top-three on the team.
All three also earned All-Big Ten honors.
The seven-seeded Terps are back in action on Saturday, May 18 in the NCAA Quarterfinals against No. 2 Duke at 2:30 pm. The game will air on ESPNU.
