Terps Dominate In Game One At Wisconsin, 12-2

MADISON, WI – Maryland softball dominated in game one against Wisconsin, winning 12-2 at Goodman Softball Complex on Friday. The Terps (21-29, 6-15 Big Ten) utilized a strong hitting performance from their lineup and a dominant outing in the circle by Courtney Wyche.  

Maryland scored its most runs in a road Big Ten game this season and matched its season high for a conference game overall. It scored five of its runs in the third inning and six in the seventh inning. Sydney Lewis led the Terps with two RBIs. Jaeda McFarland, Mazie MacFarlane, Megan Mikami, Madison Runyan and Sammi Woods all added RBIs. 

  McFarland (2-for-5), Mikami (2-for-5), Woods (2-for-4), Diamond Williams (2-for-3) and Michaela Jones (3-for-3) all finished with multiple hits. McFarland added two runs and now ranks second in program history in that category with 136 career runs. 
  Wyche pitched her 18th complete game and earned her 12th win of the season. She struck out 13 batters and surrendered only two runs. 

The Badgers (19-28, 8-13 Big Ten) manufactured a run in the third and fourth innings despite only recording five hits. 

 
Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland struck huge, scoring five runs in the third inning with RBI singles by Jaeda McFarland and Mazie MacFarlane. McFarland and MacFarlane scored on a Badgers error, and Madison Runyan advanced the final run home with a sacrifice groundout. 
  • The Badgers added their first run of the game in the bottom frame of the third inning but trailed by four runs.
  • Wisconsin drove in an additional run in the fourth, cutting the Terps lead to three runs entering the fifth inning. 
  • Megan Mikami hit an RBI single, increasing the Terps lead to 6-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • The Terps poured six runs in the seventh inning to take a 12-2 lead. Sammi Woods and Sydney Lewis each singled, Lewis drove in two baserunners.

  • Courtney Wyche struck out 13 batters in the game, increasing her career total to 647, which is fourth all-time. Next on the list is Kerry Hickey (2008-11), with 663 career strikeouts. Her 222 strikeouts on the season also rank as the eighth most for a single-season in program history.  
  • Wyche is also fourth on the all-time innings pitched list, with 616.1 innings in her career. Next on the list is Kendra Knight (2009-12), who threw 630.1 innings in her career.
  • Wyche pitched her 51st complete game of her career, which is fourth in program history. Kendra Knight (2009-12) is third with 52 complete games. 
  • Wyche earned the 53rd win of her career, which is fourth in program history. Next on the list is Kerry Hickey (2008-11), who has 55 career wins.
  • Jaeda McFarland is second all-time in runs scored. She scored two runs and now has 136 in her career. She's three runs away from passing Lindsey Schmeiser (2013-16) and claiming the program record. 
  • McFarland is now third in program history for career hits. She recorded two in the game and now has 213. She just moved in front of Kelly Shipman (1996-99). Next on the list is Jenny Belak (2005-08), with 219 career hits. 
  • McFarland's 112 career RBIs are seventh in program history and only three from passing Jennifer Potzman (1998-2001). 
  • McFarland stole one base today and is second in school history with 69 for her career. She is chasing her teammate Mikami, who stands alone with 77 stolen bases.
