Four-Seed Terps Open NCAA Tournament Against Robert Morris On Friday

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The No. 4 seeded Terps open up the NCAA Tournament this Friday against Robert Morris at noon at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The contest will air live on ESPN Plus. The other side of the region will see Penn State and James Madison at 3 p.m., both regular season opponents for Maryland. The winners of each contest will face each other in the second round on Sunday, May 12 at 12:30 p.m.

Parking is free in Lot 11b for both Friday games. Tickets can be purchased here. Admission is free for the first 100 college students with a valid ID.
 
Where we are
  • Maryland looks to compete in its 34th consecutive NCAA appearance against Robert Morris in the first round on Friday.
  • ​​The Terps enter the tournament at 12-5 overall with six wins over top-25 teams and three wins over top-5 teams, including then-ranked No. 5 Syracuse, No. 2 James Madison and No. 2 Michigan.
  • This will be the first ever matchup between the Terps and the Colonials. 
  • Earning the fourth seed in the tournament, the Terps are looking to make a strong run with top-players Meghan Ball, Shaylan Ahearn, and Eloise Clevenger who all earned First-Team All-Big Team honors.
  • Maryland finished the regular season with a perfect, 9-0, record on the road. The Terps closed out conference play at 4-2 and collected wins against Ohio State, Rutgers, Michigan and Johns Hopkins.
  • Ball and Emily Sterling were selected as Tewaaraton Nominees at the conclusion of the regular season.
  • Maryland led the conference with eight All-Big Ten honorees. Ahearn, Ball and Clevenger were named to the First Team. Five Terps - Edmondson, Leubecker, Kennedy Major, Libby May and Sterling - were selected to the Second Team, the most in the Big Ten. Julia Hammerschlag collected the Sportsmanship Team honor.

Championship facility
  • The Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex completed renovations this fall, achieving a comprehensive enhancement of the facility transforming the existing 5,500 square foot facility into a 17,193 square foot team house.
  • The facility features larger, separated locker rooms for Field Hockey and Women's Lacrosse student-athletes with spacious team rooms with all-new technologies, an increased Sports Medicine room with new rehabilitative and recovery equipment, inclusive of hydrotherapy space, a signature lobby to recognize and celebrate the championships and success of both programs, a relocated fan entrance for ease of access to the complex seating areas and a second floor addition with coaching offices and meeting spaces.
  • This season, Terp Nation set a new attendance record at the Complex with 2,400 in attendance on April 6.

2024 standouts
  • Hannah Leubecker leads Maryland in scoring with 47 goals. She ranks second in points behind Eloise Clevenger who leads the team in points (73), as well as assists 49. She averages 2.9 assists per game, leading the Big Ten, and 4.3 points per game ranking fifth in the conference. Her assists per game average ranks ninth in the nation. 
  • Maryland's 'Defender U' defensive unit currently ranks second in the conference and eighth in the nation in scoring defense (8.82). They have forced 20 shot clock violations through 17 games.
  • Chrissy Thomas has added 21 points in her last five games, from 12 goals and nine assists. The senior tied her season-high five points (3G, 2A) against Princeton in the regular season finale.
  • Meghan Ball has been a dominant presence on defense for the Terps. She ranks second in the conference in caused turnovers per game (2.10) and fifth in ground balls per game (2.0).
  • Emily Sterling continues her outstanding play in net for the Terps. She owns the fifth-best save percentage in the country of .526. Sterling leads the conference in saves per game (9.80).
  • Clevenger has now become sixth all-time in single-season assists (49) after surpassing Kelly Amonte (1996) and looks to continue climbing the ranks. She is two assists away from passing Aurora Cordingley (2022) and three away from Alex Aust (2012).

Draw Queens
  • Shaylan Ahearn, a First Team All-Big Ten selection, continues her dominant play in the center circle for the Terps. After taking a heavy majority of the draws in the regular season, Ahearn and the Terps own a 62 percent win rate, the sixth-best in the country.
  • Ahearn ranks third all-time in career draws (406) and ranks fifth in the Big Ten with 5.00 draws per game. She is looking to become second all-time in career draws as she is 15 away from Kali Hartshorn (2017-20).
  • Ahearn, Meghan Ball and Shannon Smith combine for 81 percent of the 254 team draw controls. Ahearn leads the team with 85 draws, followed by Ball with 64 and Smith with 57. Ball ranks eighth in the conference with 3.76 controls per game, while Smith sits tenth with 3.35.

Dominance Under Reese
  • Head Coach Cathy Reese is in her 18th season at the helm of Maryland women's lacrosse. The winningest coach in program history, Reese is 329-46 as head coach and has led the Terps to five National Championships, 12 Final Fours and 22 Conference Championships.
  • Maryland is 171-11 at home under Reese, with eight undefeated home campaigns in the last 11 seasons (2013, '14, '15, '16, '17, '18, '19, '21).
  • Reese is the fifth all-time winningest active head coach and the sixth-winningest coach of all-time in Division 1 women's lacrosse at 359-75. Former Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal is the all-time winningest women's lacrosse coach with 578 wins.

  • The Terrapins earned their 34th consecutive trip (1990-2023) to the dance this Sunday.
  • Maryland has won four of the last nine National Championships, last winning in 2019. The Terps lead the nation with 39 NCAA appearances and are also tops in wins (79), championship game appearances (22) and NCAA titles (14). The Terps are making their 33rd consecutive appearance in the postseason.
  • The Terps have made 12 of the past 14 Final Fours dating back to 2009. Under Cathy Reese, Maryland has five National Championships (2010, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019). Reese is 41-11 at Maryland in the NCAA Tournament, making 12 Final Fours and eight championship games.
  • Maryland has won eight straight first round games and earned eight bye weeks. The Terps have never lost in round one under Reese.
