Brooke DeBerdine and Emma DeBerdine are sisters who will represent the United States in women's field hockey for the first time at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, which will start on July 27. Most recently, the sisters earned silver at the 2024 FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier in India to make it to Paris.
During her career in College Park from 2017-21, Brooke was a standout midfielder and two-time team captain. She was a 2022 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient and the first Terrapin to start 100 career games, owning the program record with 104 starts. The 5-foot midfielder was recognized as the NFHCA Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year and Honda Award Finalist in 2021. She's also a two-time All-American, two-time All-Big Ten honoree, and two-time NCAA All-Tournament Team selection.
Brooke significantly contributed to Maryland's 2018 team, which finished as the NCAA national champion runner-up and Big Ten regular season and tournament champion. She was also part of the 2017 NCAA national champion runner-up team and the 2019 Big Ten regular season title team.
After graduating from Maryland, Brooke was named to the U.S. Women's National Team in 2022 and placed fourth at the 2022 Pan American Cup alongside her sister. She has also played three seasons from 2021-24 in the FIH Pro League, including one with Emma in 2022-23.
Emma, Brooke's younger sister, is also a two-time All-American. She spent her undergraduate career as a Terp from 2019-22. The midfielder started 75 of the 76 games she played, tallying 69 points (23 goals and 23 assists). Emma has multiple accolades during her undergraduate career, including two NFHCA All-American honors and two All-Big Ten recognitions.
Emma played alongside Brooke in Maryland from 2019-21. She was pivotal to the 2019 and 2022 Big Ten regular season title teams. Emma is returning to College Park and using her remaining year of eligibility for the 2024 season.
