Maryland Ends Three-Game Home Stand Against James Madison on Sunday

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland closes out its three-game home stand as it hosts James Madison. The two teams met last season in Harrisonburg, with the game ending in a 2-2 draw.

The game will air on B1G+.

The Terrapins are coming off a 2-0 home loss at the hands of American on Aug. 22. After a stalemate in the first half, American would take the lead 58th minute on a deflected ball in the box, and then answered again four minutes later with another goal. Liz Beardsley supported the Terps in goal once again, making four saves in the match. 

Series History - James Madison
  • The Terrapins and the Dukes have met 19 times in the all-series, with the Terps holding the advantage with a 10-6-3 record. The two teams met during the 2023 season, with the game ending in a 2-2 draw.
  • The Terps got a pair of goals from Lisa McIntyre, the first of which was the first in her collegiate career. James Madison scored two goals late in the second half to even the game.

Lisa McIntyre scored a brace in last season's match-up with James Madison. The first goal McIntyre scored in the game was also her first goal of her college career.
Season-Opening Success
  •  In Maryland's 2-0 win over Lehigh, the Terps extended their unbeaten streak in season openers to eight. In those eight games, the Terps have a record of 5-0-3.
  • Dating back to the 1995 season, the Terps are 21-4-5 in season opening games. The streak started on Sept. 3, 1995 with a 6-0 win for Maryland over Virginia Tech in College Park. In season openers away from home, The Terps are 9-3-2 dating back to 1995.
  • With its 2-2 draw against Stony Brook on Sunday, Maryland extended its unbeaten streak in home opening games to  eight. The streak began on Aug. 18, 2017 with a 2-1 win over Drexel. In these eight home openers, the Terps have a record of 4-0-4.

The Terps extended their unbeaten streak in season-openers to eight consecutive games. In their last eight season openers, the Terps hold a record of 5-0-3.
Many Firsts Highlight Opening Week
  • Multiple returning Terps also had their own firsts in the team's opening week.
  • Kennedy Bell opened the scoring for the Terps with a right-footed shot in the 24th minute in its 2-0 win over Lehigh. The goal for Bell was her first collegiate goal. Bell made the move to winger in 2024, after playing as a right back in 2023. Bell finished the 2023 season with one assist while playing primarily as a defender.
  • Ava Morales delivered the assist to set up the opening goal by Bell. For the junior Morales, it marked the first assist for the junior midfielder. Morales was the leading goal scorer for the Terps during the 2023 season with three.
  • Tahirah Turnage-Morales got the start for the Terps at center back in the season-opener, the first start for the defender in almost two years. Turnage-Morales missed the entire 2023 season due to injury, and saw her first action for the Terps since Oct. 23, 2022 at Purdue. Turnage-Morales' last start as a Terp came on Oct. 20, 2022 at Indiana.
  • Kelsey Smith scored her first collegiate goal in Maryland's 2-2 draw against Stony Brook. Smith is playing her second season with the Terps after playing in all 18 games in 2023. Smith missed the 2022 season due to an injury.

Kelsey Smith scored the first goal for the Terps in their 2-2 draw against Stony Brook on Aug. 18. The goal for Smith was the first for the redshirt sophomore in her collegiate career.
Shot Stopper
  • Liz Beardsley continues to be a stalwart in goal for the Terps. Beardsely made 16 saves in the season's first three games, and is currently one of the nation's top shot stoppers. Beardsley ranks in the top 30 nationally in saves through three games of the season, and currently leads the Big Ten.
  • Beardsley was a key force in goal for the Terps during the 2023 season. Beardsley made 67 saves in 2023 for the Terps. Beardsley helped lead the team to six shutouts last season. Her six shutouts a season ago were the most for a Maryland goalkeeper since 2014.

Liz Beardsley has been impressive in goal for the squad through three games. Beardsley has 16 saves to start the season, which ranks in the top 30 among goalkeepers in the nation
Scouting the Dukes
  • James Madison comes into the game with a record of 1-1-1. The Dukes started the season with a 3-0 win over Villanova, scoring all three of their goals in the second half. In its second game of the season, James Madison suffered a loss at home to Virginia Tech 2-0. In its most recent game, James Madison played to a 3-3 draw with La Salle. The Dukes would take the lead early in the first half, scoring two goals and going into the half with a 2-0 lead. La Salle would pull two back in the 47th and 49th minute to tie the game at two. The Dukes retook the lead in the 60th minute, making it a 3-2 game. It was a lead they would hold until the 84th minute, when La Salle scored to make it a 3-3 score line.
  • Ariana Reyes leads the team in goals, having scored two through the Dukes' first three games. Three players are tied for the team lead in assists with two, with Reyes tied with Shea Collins and Lexi Vanderlion. As a team the Dukes have eight saves through three games, which ranks in the top-25 nationally.
  • In goal the Dukes are led by Sofia DeCerb. DeCerb has made 14 goals, which leads the Sun Belt early on in the season. DeCerb has done a great job of stopping shots on goal early in the season, coming into the game with a save percentage of .737
