COLLEGE PARK, MD – In a matchup between two top defenses in college field hockey, No. 4 Maryland walked it off against No. 7 Louisville, 2-1, in double overtime in its 2024 home season-opener.
Senior Hope Rose scored the game-winning goal with 1:18 remaining in the second overtime. Rose controlled an inbound pass and cut through two Cardinal defenders before delivering a strike past the Louisville goalkeeper.
Sophomore defender Josie Hollamon scored the other goal and Maryland's first goal of the season off of a penalty corner in the second period.
On the defensive end, sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko made two saves. The Terps' defense, led by fifth-year team captain
Rayne Wright, came through with timely takeaways. Maryland faced just three shots throughout the contest.
Alina Gerke also made three key blocks on clean shots coming off penalty corners late in the first overtime.
This was just the third season opener for Maryland field hockey to go to overtime. The other two occurred in 2004 and 2021, resulting in Maryland victories. The Terps have now won 28 consecutive season-openers, last losing in 1996. Overall, Maryland is now 46-3-2 all-time in season openers.
