Terps Down No. 8 Wisconsin, 3-0

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland men's soccer downed No. 8 Wisconsin, 3-0, on Friday at Ludwig Field. The Terps' last win over a top-10 team was last season on Aug. 27, 2023, at home against No. 10 UNC Greensboro. The 3-0 win was also the biggest for the Terps over a top-10 team since beating No. 6 Indiana, 3-0, on Oct. 18, 2019.

Maryland (3-1-3) scored first off the foot of junior midfielder Chris Steinleitner in the 16th minute. It was his first career goal as a Terp after transferring during the offseason from Eastern Florida.

Graduate defender Bjarne Thiesen then scored in the 46th minute. Max Rogers and Steinleitner were credited with the assist. It was Thiesen's third career goal in a Maryland uniform and his first of the season.

Junior midfielder Colin Griffith scored Maryland's third and final in the 52nd minute of an assist from Rogers. The goal was the fifth of Griffith's career and his second in 2024 after scoring in the Terps' last outing against San Diego State.

Griffith last scored goals in back-to-back games on Nov. 4, 2022, against Northwestern and Nov. 9, 2022, against Indiana. Max Rogers had an assist on all three goals for the Terps. The last time a Maryland player had three assists in a game was Luke van Heukelum against Villanova on Oct. 10, 2023.

Maryland's defense, led by Luca Costabile, William Kulvik, Alex Nitzl and Theisen, was dominant, limiting Wisconsin to just two first-half shots. Freshman goalkeeper Laurin Mack tallied three saves and earned his first career shutout.

The Badgers (5-1) had given up just two goals through five games before their matchup with the Terps.

Cirovski's Take
"Absolutely delighted with the effort," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "That was our best performance of the year. It was a complete effort from beginning to end, and it's something we've been building to while we've been managing some minutes of players. Tonight we had our most available lineup for the year, with the exception of Luke. It was a great performance. I challenged the guys to respond after a tough game on Monday, and they responded."

Chris Steinleitner On The Team's Scoring Output
"We had a lot of shots before in every game, but we didn't translate that into goals. Now finally it worked out. ... We did a good job holding the ball up front, and we just benefited off the set pieces and that's what we want to do. So pretty happy about the result and happy that we could score three."
