COLLEGE PARK, MD – In a battle of two of the top programs in the nation, No. 2 Northwestern outlasted No. 5 Maryland, 1-0, on Friday night at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The Wildcats continued their undefeated start to the season, moving to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten. The Terps are now 5-3 and 1-1 in the conference.Â
In goal for Maryland, Alyssa Klebasko made four saves.
Hope Rose had three of Maryland's eight shots for the game.
Northwestern, which has advanced to the NCAA Championship game in each of the last three seasons, took a first-quarter lead and held it for the rest of the game. The Wildcats held a 13-to-8 shot advantage for the game including 9-to-3 in the second half. The visitors also maintained an 11-to-7 edge in corners.
Annabel Skubisz anchored the Wildcat defense with four saves. Ilse Tromp scored at the 10:38 mark of the first quarter for the lone tally of the match.
Breaking Down The Action
- Klebasko made a nice save on a penalty corner shot by Tromp just six minutes into the game.Â
- Northwestern took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Tromp off a penalty corner. Lauren Hunter and Ashley Sessa were credited with assists on the tally that came 10:38 into the action.Â
- The Wildcats held a 1-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.Â
- The Terps earned a penalty corner with 24:16 on the clock, but Emma Deberdine's effort was gathered by the Northwestern goalkeeper.
- At the half, Northwestern held on to a slim 1-0 lead. The Terps held the shot advantage 5-4. There were a combined eight penalty corners in the first half, with both teams tied with four apiece
- The Wildcats got an opportunity midway through the third quarter on a corner. Tromp took the shot off the corner, but Alyssa Klebasko made the save to end the chance.
- In the fourth quarter, Tromp flicked a shot on goal, but Klebasko made a terrific stick save to keep the deficit at just one with 12 minutes to go.
- With just under seven minutes to go, Northwestern was assessed a yellow card giving the Terps a man-up advantage.Â
- The Terps managed three consecutive corners with just over five minutes remaining, but could not get a shot past Skubisz.
- Maryland pulled Klebasko with 5:08 remaining to go up two players, but Northwestern's defense was able to keep the Terps at bay.

- Maryland returns to action next Friday as the Terps travel to Indiana to face the Hoosiers at 1 p.m., on Oct. 4., in a game that will air on Big Ten Network.Â
