No. 6 Terps Open 100th Season Against No. 18 Richmond

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 6 Maryland (0-0) opens the 2025 season at home against No. 18 Richmond (0-0) at SECU Stadium. Along with Maryland's 2020 season opener against High Point on Feb. 1, it is tied for the earliest game in program history.

This year marks the 100th season of Maryland men's lacrosse. The program has produced 525 All-Americans, 29 Final Fours, and four NCAA National Championships. The Terps have remarkably also finished .500 or better in every season.

  • The Terps boast an all-time record of 893-290-4 (.754), dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). Maryland has finished with a .500 or better record in all previous 99 seasons. The program reached the 800-win milestone with a 12-6 victory on April 12, 2017, at Albany.
  • Maryland finished the decade of the 2010s 134-42 for a .761 winning percentage, making it the winningest decade in Terrapin lacrosse history. Nine of those seasons came under the direction of head coach John Tillman, who has posted a 122-38 record and a .763 winning percentage at the helm for Maryland.   
  • During the decade of the 2000s, Maryland went 111-49 for a .694 win percentage. In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland posted a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage.

Maryland wins the 2022 National Championship, capping a perfect 18-0 season. 
Series history
  • Maryland has won all four previous meetings against the Spiders, with the first one coming in 2019. This marks the fourth straight year that the Terps and Spiders will face each other in their respective season openers.
  • Last season, the Terps came out on top in a double-overtime thriller, 12-11. Three of the four meetings between the schools have been decided by one goal.

Season openers
  • Maryland has won 31 consecutive season-opening games dating back to the 1994 season. The Terps are 95-3-1 all-time in season openers dating back to the program's first varsity season in 1924.
  • In last year's season opener, Owen Murphy scored in double overtime as No. 5 Maryland men's lacrosse opened its 2024 season with a dramatic 12-11 victory over No. 19 Richmond at Robins Stadium. Murphy scored the winning goal on an assist from Ryan Siracusa.

  • Maryland has won 28 of its past 32 home games and went 6-1 at SECU Stadium in 2023.
  • The Terps are 85-19 (.817) overall in home games under John Tillman since 2011.

The last time the Terps played at SECU Stadium, they defeated Princeton 16-8 in the NCAA Tournament First Round. 
About the terps
  • The Terps welcome back a trio of attackman/midfield who all started the majority of the games in 2024. Senior Eric Spanos has played 33 career games with 61 points (43g-18a), junior Braden Erksa has 89 points over 33 games (50g-39a) and fifth-year Daniel Kelly has 71 points (54g-17a) over 51 games.
  • Defensively, the Terps return a trio of key cogs in last year's 2024 run in close defenseman Jackson Canfield, Colin Burlace and Will Schaller. That group has combined for 129 games played. Additionally, the Terps return both Jack McDonald and AJ Larkin at LSM as well as George Stamos, Eric Kolar and Alex Wicks at SSDM.
  • In goal, Logan McNaney is back for his sixth season. The 2022 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player has 585 career saves, the fourth most in program history. He will be wearing the program's historic No. 1 jersey this season, the first goalie to wear the number since Melvin Stephens (1989-91).
  • The Terps welcome six transfers in 2025. The group of Noah Armitage (Stony Brook), Jack Dowd (Salisbury), Bryce Ford (Fairfield), Zack Goorno (Bowdoin), Matt Keegan (Binghamton) and Luca Ward (Holy Cross) have 296 games combined.
