Maryland Earns Gritty 89-82 Road Win Over Marquette

David Coit scored a season-high 19 points as five Terps finished in double figures on Saturday.

MILWAUKEE, WI — Maryland passed its first true road test of the season with a 89-82 win over Marquette on Saturday. The Terps utilized big days from the bulk of their roster to imrpove to 3-1 on the young season.

A late run propelled Maryland past the Golden Eagles (3-2) as five Terps finished in double figures. Maryland scored 47 second-half points and erased a nine-point deficit to flex its depth and grit on the road. 

David Coit and the Terps' offense got off to an electric start. He sank three of his four total threes in the opening five minutes as Maryland started 4-4 from three-point range. Coit set a season-high in three-pointers and scored a season-high 19 points on Saturday. Pharrel Payne got off to a hot start, shooting 6/6 from the field in his 100th-career game before leaving the contest with an injury in the second half. 

Trailing in the second half, Maryland used a 12-0 run to jump back ahead as Darius Adams (16 points), Isaiah Watts (18 points, 3-4 from three-point range) and Elijah Saunders (eight points, 11 rebounds) stepped up in Payne's absence. The Terps finished with 22 points from their bench and 38 in the paint in their best win of the Buzz Williams era thus far as he made his return to Marquette.

How it Happened:
1st Half:
  • Coit hit a three-pointer for the Terps' first points of the day.
  • Another Coit three put Maryland ahead 6-5 early.
  • Watts and Coit both drained threes as Maryland started 4-4 from deep range.
  • Maryland hit seven of eight field goals to open a 20-11 lead. 
  • Coit hit his fourth three nearly halfway through the first half.
  • Marquette went on a 7-0 run to work back into the contest.
  • A Golden Eagles three put them ahead late in the half. 
  • Two free throws from Watts tied the game with six seconds to play. 
  • The two teams took a 42-42 tie into the break. 
2nd Half:
  • Andre Mills rolled in Maryland's first points of the second half with a layup.
  • Payne threw a dunk down to start his day 5-5 from the field. 
  • Another Payne dunk brought Maryland within five. 
  • Saunders got the Terps within a point with a layup.
  • Saunders drained a three and Coit hit a layup as Maryland reclaimed the 65-64 lead. 
  • Watts hit double figures with a three before Adams added a layup to put Maryland ahead by six. 
  • Maryland kept Marquette off the board for over four minutes late in the game and held on to grab an 89-82 victory.
Payne's Centennial Milestone
  • Pharrel Payne played in his 100th collegiate game on Saturday as he made his 41st-career start.
  • He logged 13 points in his milestone game before leaving with an injury. 
  • Coit is also closing in on 100-career games. He played in his 96th on Saturday.
Double-Digit Dominance:
  • Adams (16 points) recorded his third-career double-digit performance on Saturday. He tied his career high with 16 points, matching his total against Coppin State.
  • Mills (11 points) picked up 10+ points for the third time this season. 
  • Coit (19 points) tallied his 59th-career double-digit performance on Saturday. He's up to three on the season.
  • Watts picked up his first double-digit day as a Terp and the 17th of his career with a season-high 18 points. 
  • Payne (13 points) picked up his 47th-career double-digit day against Marquette. 
Matchup History:
  • Saturday marked the third all-time meeting between Maryland and Marquette, with both schools holding a previous win over the other. 
  • The Terps defeated the Golden Eagles 84-63 in the 2019 Orlando Invitational.
  • Saturday's matchup marked the first meeting between the two teams in Milwaukee. 
  • Buzz Williams returned to Marquette to face his former team. Williams coached the Golden Eagles for six seasons and took them to five NCAA Tournaments.
