Maryland Falls 80-72 To No. 23 Virginia

The Terps battled one of the top teams in the nation on the road on Saturday.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — The Terps (6-6) fell to No. 23 Virginia 80-72 on Saturday afternoon. The two former ACC foes renewed their historic rivalry, but a second-half surge by the Cavaliers (10-1) added a win to their ranked season.

David Coit led the Terps with 15 points and a trio of three-pointers. Myles Rice had a solid day with 12 points and four assists while Darius Adams added nine points and four rebounds to his freshman season and Elijah Saunders contributed 10 points against his former team.

A defensive first half saw the Terps hold UVA off the board for 5:49 — the Cavaliers' longest drought of the season — and Maryland held them without a field goal for over six minutes.

Maryland's offense went on a 19-4 run across 10:35 as the defense held UVA at bay. The Terps' defense recorded new season marks for lowest opponent field goal percentage (25%) and tied for the fewest field goals allowed (nine) in the low-scoring opening half.

The Terps got off to a hot start in the second half as they started 4-of-4 from three-point range as the offense found its rhythm. Coit scored all 15 of his points on Saturday in the second half, but Virginia dealt the day's final blows and came away with the win.

Maryland controlled the boards against the Cavaliers. Solomon Washington grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds as the Terps outgained UVA 41-34 in the rebound battle. The defense held UVA's leading season scorer, Thijs De Ridder, to five points on 1-of-8 shooting, but the Cavaliers got 20 points from Dallin Hall to lead all scorers.
