Terps Fall To Hawkeyes In Big Ten Opener

The Hawkeyes used a big first half from three-point range to defeat Maryland in the Terps’ first conference game.

IOWA CITY, IA — Maryland fell 83-64 on the road to Iowa to open Big Ten play on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawkeyes (8-1, 1-1 Big Ten) seemingly couldn't miss from three-point range in the first half. They built an early lead and used it to earn their first conference win of the season, despite Pharrel Payne's double-double effort for Maryland (6-4, 0-1 Big Ten).

He's scored in double figures in all nine games he's played in for Maryland this season and has scored 15+ points in six of them.   David Coit had a big day for the Terps, contributing 13 points on 3-of-6 shooting from deep. Maryland won the rebound battle 39-32 and shot 38 free throws to Iowa's 12, but dropped its first conference test of the season to a talented Hawkeyes squad.

Iowa built a first-half lead by starting 7-of-8 from three-point range. The Hawkeyes opened the second half on a 12-2 run to pull away from the Terps on Saturday. Bennett Stirtz led Iowa with 25 points as the Hawkeyes snapped a three-game losing streak to Maryland.
