No. 6 Terps Open 100th Season Of Men’s Lacrosse With 12-7 Victory Over No. 18 Richmond

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 6 Maryland men's lacrosse opened the 100th season in program history with a 12-7 victory over No. 18 Richmond on Saturday at SECU Stadium. Maryland has won 32 consecutive season-opening games dating back to the 1994 season. The Terps are now 96-3-1 all-time in season openers dating back to the program's first varsity season in 1924.

The Terps scored the first seven goals of the game while holding the Spiders scoreless for 31:03. It marked the first time they posted a first-half shutout since March. 23, 2015, against Robert Morris. The Terps led 9-0 at the break and went on to win 12-7.

Maryland's defense shined throughout the contest. It forced three first-half shot clock violations and five turnovers for the game. Logan McNaney, sporting the No. 1 jersey, made 14 saves and picked up five groundballs between the pipes as Maryland's defensive anchor. McNaney, Will Schaller, Daniel Kelly, George Stamos and Jackson Canfield all forced a turnover.

On the offensive end, the Terps received production from their transfers and returning stars. Transfer standouts included Matthew Keegan (three goals and two assists) and Bryce Ford (two goals and one assist). Keegan posted his 16th career hat trick, and both recorded their first multi-goal outings in a Maryland uniform.

Returners Daniel Kelly, Zach Whittier, Sean Creter and Braden Erksa scored goals. Kelly scored three times for his eighth career hat trick and Erksa found the back of the net twice for his 16th career multi-goal effort. Creter scored a goal off a face-off win early in the third for his first career goal. He also added four groundballs.

Creter and Shea Keethler took turns from the face-off dot. They combined to win 13 of 20 face-offs. Keethler added three groundballs to his stat line.

The Terps have won all five meetings against the Spiders, dating back to 2019. This was the fourth straight year the Terps and Spiders faced each other in their respective season openers.

Breaking Down The Action
