No. 7 Terps Lose Season Opener To No. 6 Orange, 15-9

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 7 Maryland women's lacrosse was defeated by No. 6 Syracuse, 15-9, in its 2025 season opener at Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Saturday. The Terps had previously won 17 of their last 18 season openers. 

The Orange netted five of the game's first six goals, and the Terps were unable to fully bridge the gap. They cut the deficit to two with back-to-back goals by Jordyn Lipkin and Kori Edmondson near the end of the first quarter, but Syracuse grew its lead.
   
Edmondson scored four total goals in the game, three of which came on free-position opportunities. She earned the 18th hat trick of her career. Her four goals tied her career-high.
    Lipkin made the first start of her career and first appearance for the Terps since their season opener last season on Feb. 9, 2024, and scored two goals. Chrissy Thomas' assist to Lipkin for the game's first goal gave Thomas 100 career points. She became the 66th Terp to reach that career milestone. Thomas posted two assists, scoring multiple points.
 
Freshman Emma Abbazia assisted Lipkin's second goal, awarding her the first point of her collegiate career. Freshman Shelby Sullivan also recorded her first career point, scoring her first goal. Maisy Clevenger was the third Terp to score multiple goals, as she netted two. 
   
JJ Suriano was one of eight Terps who made their first career start. She started at goalie and made four saves. Neve O'Ferrall also caused three turnovers and picked up three ground balls to lead the Terps defensively.
  
The Terps won 16 of 28 draw controls as a team. Sullivan won seven draws to lead Maryland. Kayla Gilmore (four wins) and Edmondson (four wins) also contributed in the midfield circle. 

Syracuse (2-0) had seven different goal scorers, led by Emma Ward's seven points (three goals and four assists). Olivia Adamson and Caroline Trinkaus added four and three goals, respectively.  
 
Breaking Down The Action
  • The first quarter of action featured a combined eight goals, but Syracuse led 5-3. Jordyn Lipkin netted the first two goals for the Terps in her first appearance since the season opener last year. Kori Edmondson scored the third on a free-position opportunity. 
  • Maryland trailed 8-4 at halftime. Edmondson scored its lone goal in the second quarter on another free-position opportunity.
  • In the third, the Orange scored five goals to the Terps' two. Edmondson scored her third of the game, and Maisy Clevenger scored the other. Syracuse led 13-6. 
  • Edmondson scored her fourth goal, Clevenger netted her second and Shelby Sullivan recorded her first career goal in the fourth.    
Hat Trick Terps 
  • Kori Edmondson scored the first hat trick of the season for the Terps. It was the 18th of her career.  
Multi Terps Update
  • Kori Edmondson (four goals) recorded multiple points for the 26th time in her career. All of those games were with multiple goals.
  • Jordyn Lipkin (two goals) recorded the 13th multi-point game of her career. It was her 12th with multiple goals.
  • Maisy Clevenger (two goals) had her fifth multi-point game of her career and her second game with multiple goals. 
  • Chrissy Thomas (two assists) had the 25th multi-point game of her career. It was her 15th game with multiple assists.
