Queen Earns Fifth Big Ten Freshman Of The Week Honor

COLLEGE PARK, MD - For the fifth time this season, Maryland's Derik Queen has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after leading the No. 25 Terps to a 2-0 week with wins at Nebraska and against Iowa.

With the honor, Queen passes the legendary Tom McMillen who earned four Rookie of the Week honors in 1971-72. He is one shy of matching Joe Smith for the most all-time after he earned the honor six times during the 1993-94 season.

Queen averaged 21.0 points and 12.0 rebounds in the wins at Nebraska (83-75) and at home against Iowa (101-75). The freshman went 15-of-20 (.750) from the floor in the two games and was 12-of-13 at the free throw line.

In the Nebraska win, he scored 24 points while adding 11 rebounds and an assist. He was 9-of-11 (.818) from the floor and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. In the win over Iowa, he added 18 points and 13 rebounds with an assist as well. He was 6-of-9 (.667) from the floor and 6-of-7 (.857) from the charity stripe. Queen was a force in the second half after Iowa led 51-57 at halftime. He scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half to spark a 54-24 second half for the Terps.

The 24 points at Nebraska marked his ninth 20-point game of the season, while his double-double against Iowa as his ninth of the season (second-most among all Maryland freshmen).

His 415 points this season are now the sixth-most for freshman scoring in Maryland history.

Queen leads the Terps in points per game with 16.0 and is second on the team in rebounds per game with 8.8. In the Big Ten, he ranks 14th in points per game, fourth in rebounds per game, and third in double-doubles (9).

He is also one of the top candidates for several prestigious national awards including the Naismith Trophy Player of the Year and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year. In the Big Ten, he is a leading candidate for Freshman of the Year and All-Big Ten First Team honors.

Queen and the Terps return to action on Thursday night when they host USC at 8:30 PM in XFINITY Center. The game will be televised on FS1 and broadcast on the Maryland Sports Radio Network.
