COLLEGE PARK, MD – Michigan State's Tre Holloman sunk a half-court buzzer-beater as No. 16 Maryland men's basketball was outlasted by No. 8 Michigan State, 58-55, at XFINITY Center on Wednesday before a sold-out, striped-out crowd. Maryland, No. 13 in the NCAA NET, is now 21-7 overall and 11-6 in Big Ten play.
Michigan State jumped in front late in the second half with a 7-0 run that gave it its largest lead to that point — 52-43 advantage at the 5:24 mark. The run was tied for the longest by either team. The Terps rallied down the stretch to tie the game with 41 seconds to play with two made free-throws by
Ja'Kobi Gillespie. The Terps then got a defensive stop and could not get the go-ahead bucket. Holloman hurled a 60-footer in desperation as the Spartans had no timeouts, and it went through the bottom of the net.
The Crab Five accounted for all of Maryland's 58 points, led by
Rodney Rice's game-high 20. Rice scored 15 of his points in the second half. Overall, he shot 6-of-12, including 4-of-8 from the 3-point line. It was his second straight game leading the Terps in scoring. Gillespie added 15 points, three assists and two steals.
Derik Queen scored 10 points while grabbing 10 rebounds, earning his 11th career double-double. Since 1993-94, he's one of just 13 Terps to post a double-double in their rookie seasons. He has the second most double-doubles in that span behind Joe Smith (20 from 1993-94).
Michigan State (23-5, 14-3 Big Ten) had 10 players reach the scoring column, led by Jase Richardson's 15 points. The Terps limited the Spartans' leading scorer, Jaden Akins (13.0 PPG), to just five points on 2-of-9 shooting.
Despite the loss, the Terps provided a stong effort defensively. They limited the Spartans as a team to 34 percent shooting from the floor, including 27 percent from the 3-point line. They also forced 12 turnovers.
