COLUMBUS, OH – After leading for nearly the first 38 minutes, No. 18 Maryland men's basketball was defeated by Ohio State, 73-70, at Value City Arena on Thursday. Maryland, No. 15 in the NCAA NET, sits at 17-6 overall and 7-5 in Big Ten play. The Buckeyes (14-9, 6-6) have now won four of their last five games.
Ohio State's Bruce Thornton banked in a three-point field goal with 7.8 seconds left in regulation to win the game for the Buckeyes. The 3-pointer came after he drilled one at the 2:10 mark to give Ohio State its first lead of the game at 67-66. Derik Queen connected on two clutch free throws to briefly give the Terps their lead back, but Thorton converted an and-one his three with seconds left.
The Terps jumped out on the Buckeyes early, scoring 14 of the first game's first 16 points. The Terps previously led by as many as 17 (39-22) at the 3:30 mark of the first half.
Julian Reese scored 24 points on 7-of-9 shooting, collected 13 rebounds and blocked two shots. He scored 20+ points for the seventh time this season. He also earned his 32nd career double-double and his 10th of the season. Reese now has over 1,300 points and 900 rebounds in his career. Ohio State (13-10, 5-7 Big Ten), No. 26 in the NCAA NET, was led by Thornton's 31 points.
