Keegan’s OT Goal Powers No. 4 Terps Past Loyola, 8-7

BALTIMORE – Matthew Keegan scored the game-winning goal in overtime as No. 4 Maryland men's lacrosse defeated Loyola, 8-7, on Saturday at Ridley Athletic Complex. The Terps erased a three-goal deficit entering the fourth quarter to improve to 2-0. Maryland has now won 24 of 27 all-time meetings against Loyola.

Four straight goals by Maryland in just over four minutes of action early in the fourth quarter gave the Terps a 6-5 lead. Eric Spanos scored three of the goals, and Braden Erksa scored the other. The Greyhounds and Terps then traded goals before Loyola sent the game to overtime with a score with two seconds on the clock.  

Keegan, a Binghamton transfer, found the back of the net just over two minutes into overtime. Shea Keethler won the face-off to begin the period and Loyola never had a chance at possession. Keegan tallied a goal and an assist in the game. 

The Terps held the Greyhounds scoreless for the first 18:27 of the game. Loyola later led 5-2 entering the fourth quarter. Maryland outscored Loyola
6-1 in the fourth quarter and overtime. 

Eric Spanos tallied four total goals in the game, earning his sixth career hat trick. Daniel Kelly scored twice, responsible for the Terps' first and final goal in regulation. Zach Whittier recorded two assists. 

Logan McNaney made 10 saves between the pipes. He reached 600 career saves with his first save of the game at 9:21 in the first quarter. McNaney became one of four players in program history to reach that milestone. 

Keethler and Sean Creter took turns at the face-off dot, combining to win 13-of-19 faceoffs. 

This was the Terps' fourth overtime game since the 2024 season. They have won all three games, including three last season. The Greyhounds fell to 0-2 on the season. 

 
Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland dominated possession early in the first quarter. However, Loyola saved six of its first nine shots. Daniel Kelly then put the Terps in the scoring column at the 3:24 mark, assisted by Matthew Keegan.  
  • Maryland's defense held Loyola scoreless for the first 18:27 of the game. But the Greyhounds rattled off three consecutive scores in the second frame. Eric Spanos ended the run with an unassisted goal at 5:30. The Greyhounds added one final goal with nine seconds left, and the Terps went into halftime trailing 4-2.
  • Loyola added a goal in the third and led 5-2 entering the final quarter. 
  • The Terps scored four consecutive goals in four minutes to take a 6-5 lead. Spanos scored three of the goals, and Braden Erksa added the other. The go-ahead goal was a man-up score by Spanos. 
  • The Greyhounds tied the game with a score at 5:31. Kelly netted his second goal at the 3:31 mark to put the Terps ahead, but Loyola sent the game to overtime with a goal with two seconds to play, tying the game at 7 apiece.  
  • Keegan scored the game winner in overtime with 2:56 on the clock. loyola never had possession in overtime.  
Hat Trick Terps
  • Eric Spanos posted his first hat trick of the season. It was the sixth of his career. 
Multi Terps Update
  • Eric Spanos (three goals) had the 17th multi-point game of his career. It was his 13th multi-goal game.
  • Daniel Kelly (two goals) had the 21st multi-point game of his career. It was his 16th game with multiple goals. 
  • Braden Erksa (one goal and one assist) had his 26th multi-point game in his three years as a Terp.
  • Matthew Keegan (one goal and one assist) recorded his second multi-point game as a Terp after transferring from Binghamton. It was his 28th multi-point game overall. 
  • Zach Whittier (two assists) recorded his seventh multi-point game. It was his fourth with multiple assists. 
Overtime Is Terp Time
  • This was Maryland's fourth overtime game in two seasons. The Terps went to overtime in three of the first six games of 2024 and won all three. 
  • Owen Murphy got the job done in Maryland's season opener at Richmond, connecting from deep in 2OT. George Stamos was the unlikely hero at Syracuse, notching the game-winner off a successful Maryland clear. Daniel Maltz notched the winner against Brown, coming off a feed from Braden Erksa.
  • The Terps are 16-8 in overtime games under John Tillman and have won six straight dating back to the 2023 season. Additionally, the Terps have not lost an overtime faceoff since Feb. 8, 2020, in a 14-13 2OT win at Richmond. Since then, Maryland has played eight overtime games, winning all 11 faceoffs in that span.
Celebrating 100 Seasons 
  • The Terps boast a record of 895-290-4, dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). Maryland has finished with a .500 or better record in all previous 99 seasons. The program reached the 800-win milestone with a 12-6 victory on April 12, 2017, at Albany.
  • Maryland finished the decade of the 2010s 134-42 for a .761 winning percentage, making it the winningest decade in Terrapin lacrosse history. Nine of those seasons came under the direction of head coach John Tillman, who has posted a 122-38 record and a .763 winning percentage at the helm for Maryland.
  • During the decade of the 2000s, Maryland went 111-49 for a .694 win percentage. In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland posted a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage.
McNaney On The Charts
  • Logan McNaney is fourth on the all-time saves list. With 10 in the game, he now has 609 for his career. Niko Amato (2011-14) is third on the list with 625 saves in his career.
  • McNaney is back for his sixth season. The 2022 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player is wearing the program's historic No. 1 jersey this season. He's the first goalie to wear the number since Melvin Stephens (1989-91).
Single Digit Defense 
  • Maryland is 128-12 since Tillman took over the program in 2011 when it allows nine goals or less. It includes a 51-game winning streak when holding foes to less than 10 goals from 2017 to April 20, 2024.
  • The Terps were 6-1 in 2024 when holding opponents under 10 goals, winning over Loyola, Princeton, Ohio State, Rutgers, Princeton and Virginia in the NCAA Tournament.
Series History 
  • Maryland has won 24 of 27 meetings against the Greyhounds.
  • Loyola won the last matchup in Baltimore. Last season, Maryland held the Greyhounds scoreless for spans of 19:30 and 34:27 en route to an 11-4 win. Logan McNaney made 12 saves in the contest.
