No. 1 Terps Set For 99th All-Time Meeting With No. 18 Virginia

WatchCOLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 1 Maryland (6-0) wraps up its non-conference slate at No. 18 Virginia at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 15. It will air on the ACC Network.

With a win, the Terps will move to 7-0 for the fourth time under head coach John Tillman since he was hired in 2011.

This year marks the 100th season of Maryland men's lacrosse. The program has produced 525 All-Americans, 29 Final Fours, and four NCAA National Championships. The Terps have remarkably also finished .500 or better in every season.
 
100th Season of maryland men's lacrosse
  • The Terps boast an all-time record of 899-290-4 (.755), dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). Maryland has finished with a .500 or better record in all previous 99 seasons. The program reached the 800-win milestone with a 12-6 victory on April 12, 2017, at Albany.
  • Maryland finished the decade of the 2010s 134-42 for a .761 winning percentage, making it the winningest decade in Terrapin lacrosse history. Nine of those seasons came under the direction of head coach John Tillman, who has posted a 122-38 record and a .763 winning percentage at the helm for Maryland.   
  • During the decade of the 2000s, Maryland went 111-49 for a .694 win percentage. In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland posted a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage.

  • Maryland owns a 51-47 all-time advantage over Virginia as the two storied programs head into their 99th matchup.
  • The teams split their two games in 2024, with the Terps winning 12-6 in the NCAA Semifinals. Last time the two sides met in Charlottesville, Brian Ruppel made a flurry of saves in overtime to set up a Daniel Kelly game-winner, 14-13.

Where we've been...
  • The Terrapins are coming off their NCAA-best 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 29th Final Four, tied with Johns Hopkins for the most by any program. The Terps returned to the NCAA Championship game for the eighth time in 13 tournaments and 17th time in program history. Maryland (11-6) won double-digit games for the 21st year in a row, the longest active streak in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse.
  • This season, Maryland is 6-0 with four wins over ranked teams, including a three-game winning streak over top-five teams. It marked the first time the program has won three consecutive games against top-five teams since the final three games when the Terps won the 2017 National Championship. It had not been done previously in three consecutive games this century.

  • Maryland is just one win away from 900 program wins.
  • With their next win, the Terps will be one of three programs to reach 900 career wins, joining Johns Hopkins and Syracuse.

McNaney on the career charts
  • With his first save at Loyola on Feb. 8, Logan McNaney officially eclipsed the 600 career save mark, becoming just the fourth Terp ever to do so. With 16 saves against Delaware on March 8, McNaney surpassed Brian Dougherty (659). He now is in sole possession of third on the all-time saves list with 665.
  • McNaney's 7.17 GAA ranks fourth in the country and his .656 save percentage ranks third.

McNaney has double-digit saves in all six games this season, including two consecutive games with 16.

  • Starting with C. Rennie Smith, who totaled 128 career points from 1955-58, a total of 62 Maryland men's lacrosse student-athletes have reached the 100-point milestone for their careers. 
  • Attackman Braden Erksa is the most recent Terp on the 100-career-points list. The junior added a goal and an assist for two points to reach 100 in his hometown of Atlanta vs. Notre Dame on March 1.
