Trio Of Hat Tricks Leads No. 5 Terps Past Penn State, 19-11

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Jordyn Lipkin, Kori Edmondson and Shelby Sullivan posted hat tricks as No. 5 Maryland women's lacrosse defeated Penn State, 19-11, in its 2025 Big Ten Conference opener at Panzer Stadium on Thursday. The Terps improved to 5-1 this season and 1-0 in conference action, winning their fifth straight game. 

Despite Lipkin scoring the game's first goal 46 seconds into the contest, the Nittany Lions (2-6) went on a 7-2 goal-scoring run to lead 7-3 at the 10:43 mark of the second quarter. However, the Terps rallied to score six unanswered goals to claim their lead back at 9-7 at 2:12 in the second frame. The six goals occurred in just 5:47, and Maryland remained in front the rest of the way. The scoring run ballooned into a 16-4 run from the 7:59 mark of the second to the end of the game. The Terps held the Nittany Lions scoreless for the entire third frame. 

Lipkin's first goal was one of her four scored on the day, giving her a career-high goal-scoring performance. It was her fifth career hat trick and her first of the season. She was efficient, netting all four of her shots while adding an assist to her stat line. 

  Sullivan, a freshman, also posted a hat trick with three goals. It was her second of the season. Edmondson, the Big Ten's Midfielder of the week, was the third Terp to record a hat trick. She scored three goals and dished out two assists. It was her fifth of the season and 22nd of her career. Overall, Maryland has nine hat tricks as a team this season through six games. 

Maisy Clevenger (two goals and two assists), Megan Kenny (two goals and an assist) and Emma Abbazia (two goals) all recorded multiple goals. Kenny's first goal was the first of her career, and she finished with her first career multi-point performance.  Abbazia earned her first multi-point game with her performance. 

Chrissy Thomas (one goal and two assists), Kayla Gilmore and Kate Sites were others to reach the scoring column. Devin Livingston (two assists) posted her first career game with multiple assists. 

Neve O'Ferrall led the defense with three caused turnovers. Annabella Schafer and Edmondson added two. Lipkin, Hailey Russo, Fallon George, Lexi Dupcak and Maddy Sterling also caused turnovers, contributing to Maryland's 12 as a team. 

JJ Suriano, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, made 11 saves between the pipes. It was her third game this season with 10 or more saves. 
The Terps won 18 of 34 draw controls as a team. Gilmore (eight wins), Sullivan (four wins) and Edmondson (three wins) led the team from the draw circle.   

Breaking Down The Action
  • Penn State led 4-3 at the end of the first. Jordyn Lipkin scored 45 seconds into the contest, but the Nittany Lions responded with three straight goals. Back-to-back goals by Kori Edmondson and Shelby Sullivan tied the game at three apiece, but Penn State added on the final tally with 1:42 to go. 
  • The Nittany Lions rattled off three quick goals to begin the second frame, making it four unanswered to lead 7-3. The Terps then went on a 7-1 goal-scoring run to lead 10-8 at halftime. The Terps outscored the Nittany Lions 7-4 in the quarter overall. 
  • Maryland held Penn State out of the third-quarter scoring column while netting six goals. It led 16-8 entering the final frame. Overall, the Terps were riding a 13-1 run.
  • Maryland added three more tallies in the fourth. They went on a 16-4 run from the 7:59 mark of the second to the end of the game.
Hat Trick Terps 
  • Jordyn Lipkin posted the fifth hat trick of her career and first of the season.
  • Shelby Sullivan also scored a hat trick. It was the freshman's second of the season. 
  • Kori Edmondson was the third Terp to record a hat trick. It was her fifth of the season and 22nd of her career. 
  • As a team, Maryland has nine hat tricks. The other is from Maisy Clevenger
Multi Terps Update
  • Jordyn Lipkin (four goals and one assist) recorded the 17th multi-point game of her career. It was her 15th with multiple goals.
  • Kori Edmondson (three goals and two assists) recorded multiple points for the 30th time in her career. She has scored multiple goals 30 times and multiple assists twice. 
  • Shelby Sullivan (three goals) recorded her fifth career multi-point game. It was her fourth with multiple goals.
  • Maisy Clevenger (two goals and two assists) had her ninth multi-point game of her career. It was her second game with multiple assists. It was her fourth game with multiple goals.
  • Megan Kenny (two goals) posted her first career multi-point game. 
  • Emma Abbazia (two goals and one assist) recorded her first career multi-point game. 
  • Chrissy Thomas (one goal and two assists) had the 29th multi-point game of her career. It was her 19th game with multiple assists. 
  • Devin Livingston (two assists) recorded her second career multi-point game. It was her first career game with multiple assists. 
Dominating The Series
  • This marked the 64th meeting between Maryland and Penn State. The Terps have historically controlled the series, leading 45-18-1 over the past 51 years. 
  • Chrissy Thomas is the only current Terp who recorded a goal against Penn State last season. In 2024, Thomas scored three goals and an assist, but the Terps fell to Penn State 12-11.
  • The two teams first met in 1974, with Maryland earning a 9-8 victory.
