INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 11-ranked and No. 2-seeded Maryland men's basketball team was defeated by No. 22-ranked and No. 3-seeded Michigan, 81-80, in the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday.
Maryland (25-8) now awaits its NCAA Tournament fate on Selection Sunday, March 16. It will be televised at 6 p.m. EST on CBS.
Michigan's (24-9) Tre Donaldson raced down the court and finished a left-handed layup through traffic with 0.4 seconds left to play. The layup was the game-winner and came in response to Derik Queen giving Maryland an 80-79 lead with five seconds to play with two clutch free throws.
Queen, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, scored a career-high and game-high 31 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the floor. He scored the most points by a Maryland freshman in any game since 2015, the most points by a Maryland freshman in any Big Ten Tournament game and the most points by any freshman in a Big Ten Tournament game since 2008.
Twenty of the freshman's points were scored in the second half alone. He even knocked down two 3-pointers despite making just two all season before entering the game.
Selton Miguel scored 16 points to go along with three steals and two assists.
Julian Reese, an All Big Ten Honorable Mention, added 13 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
All Big Ten Third Team selection, Ja'Kobi Gillespie, scored 10 points and recorded nine assists. He had 18 assists through Maryland's two tournament games.
Rodney Rice finished with eight points, as the Crab Five scored 78 of Maryland's 80 points.
The Wolverines were led by Vladislav Goldin (25 points and 10 rebounds) and Danny Wolf (21 points and 14 rebounds).
Breaking Down The Action
- Maryland and Michigan were tied at 10-10 at the first media timeout. Derik Queen started 2-of-2 from the floor and led the Terps with four points. Julian Reese and Ja'Kobi Gillespie each had three points.
- The Terps led 16-14 at the 11:55 media timeout. Maryland was shooting at a 50% clip, while Michigan shot just 36%. Queen led all scorers with nine points.
- Selton Miguel got hot, making a pull-up jumper and 3-pointer sandwiched between a bucked by Gillespie midway through the first. The Terps led the Wolverines 23-20 at the 7:49 media timeout.
- Michigan sparked a 9-0 run that forced Maryland to take a timeout at the 4:35 mark. It jumped ahead, 29-25.
- The Terps responded with a 7-0 run out of the timeout, but the Wolverines later went into the halftime break riding a 7-0 run. Maryland trailed by just four, 38-34 at halftime with balances scoring all-around.
- At the first second-half media timeout, the Wolverines stretched their lead to double digits. They led 46-34 and were in the middle of a 15-0 run that extended back to the end of the first half.
- Maryland quickly got back in the game with a 7-0 run to trail 49-41 at the 15:56 media timeout. Gillespie hit a 3-pointer, Queen made a second-chance pull-up jumper, and Miguel added a pair of free throws.
- The Terps sparked a 12-0 run leading into the 8:19 media timeout, where they took a 62-61 lead. It was Maryland's first lead since two minutes to play in the first. Queen had eight points in the run.
- Maryland and Michigan went back and forth. The Wolverines took a 74-71 lead heading into the final media timeout.
- Maryland took a timeout as it trailed 76-74 with 1:35 to play.
- Michigan's Tre Donaldson then hit a 3-pointer to put Maryland ahead 79-76 with 28 seconds to play. Reese then made it a one-point game with a layup on the other end.
- Queen made two clutch free throws with five seconds to play, taking an 80-79 lead. However, Donaldson raced down the court and made a left-handed layup through contact with 0.4 seconds to go.
Double-Figure Factors
- Derik Queen scored 31 points, scoring double-digit points for the 27th time in his freshman season. It was his 12th straight game scoring in double figures. He's tied with Gillespie for the most double-digit scoring games this season.
- Selton Miguel scored 16 points, his 84th career double-figure game and his 24th as a Terp this season. He leads the Terps in double-digit scoring games and overall scoring, with 1,584 career points in his five-year career.
- Julian Reese recorded 13 points for his 78th career game in double digits. He has scored double figures for the 22nd time this season.
- Ja'Kobi Gillespie scored 10 points and earned his 67th career game in double figures. It was his 27th game scoring double digits this season. He's tied with Queen for the most double-digit scoring games this season.
The Crab Five
- Maryland's starters, dubbed "The Crab Five" on social media, combined to score 78 of its 80 points in the game.
- The scoring amongst the starters was as follows: Derik Queen (31 points), Selton Miguel (16 points), Julian Reese (13 points), Ja'Kobi Gillespie (10 points) and Rodney Rice (eight points).
- Maryland is one of four major conference programs with all five starters scoring double figures while starting at least 50 percent of the team's games. Arizona State, Kentucky and Michigan join the Terps. The Terps' five consists of: Queen (16.3), Gillespie (14.6), Rice (13.9), Reese (13.1), and Miguel (11.9).
- Maryland's five starters — the team's five leading scorers — have a combined scoring average of 69.8, the highest among all major conference programs.
Queen Of The Court
- Derik Queen scored 31 points while grabbing three rebounds. He became the first Terp to score 30+ in a conference tournament game since Dez Wells in the 2013 ACC Quarterfinals.
- Since 2008-09, Maryland freshmen have had 41 twenty-point games. Queen has 11, passing Melo Trimble (10) for the most in that span in program history. With his 11th 20-point game of the season, Queen has the most by a Maryland freshman since Joe Smith had 15 in 1993-94.
- Queen's points per game mark (16.3) is second among Maryland freshmen from 1947-48. Joe Smith (19.4) is the only one who averaged more points. Furthermore, 18 of the top 26 freshmen scorers in program history were NBA Draft picks.
- The freshman is third on the program's freshman scoring list with 538 points this season. Next on the list is Melo Trimble, who scored 568 points in 2015.
- Queen is third on the freshman rebounding list with 297 boards. Second on the list is Joe Smith (322 from 1994).

- Julian Reese scored 13 points while grabbing five rebounds
- Reese moved to 22nd all-time in program history for scoring with 1,443 points. He passed Jake Layman (1436 from 2012-16). Next on the list is Eric Ayala (1449 from 2018-22).
- He has 986 rebounds in his career, ranking third on Maryland's all-time rebounds list. Second on the list is Lonny Baxter (998 from 1998-2002).
- The big man blocked two shots, ranking eighth on Maryland's all-time blocked shots list with 177 in his career. Joe Smith ranks seventh with 190 blocks from 1993-95.
- Reese has over 1,400 points and 900 rebounds in his career. He's one of five players in program history who reached those career thresholds.
Postseason Honors
- Derik Queen was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He was also named to the All-Big Ten First Team by the coaches and Second Team by the media. He was a unanimous selection to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Queen is the first Terp since Melo Trimble in 2014-15 to earn All-Big Ten First Team honors.
- Ja'Kobi Gillespie was selected by the coaches and media as an All-Big Ten Third Team. This is his first year in the Big Ten after transferring from Belmont, which plays in the Missouri Valley Conference.
- Julian Reese earned honorable mention accolades from both coaches and media. This was his third time receiving the honor.
- Selton Miguel was chosen as the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree for Maryland.
