Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 1 Terps Earn 900th Win In Program History, Knocking Off No. 18 Virginia, 12-6

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – No. 1 Maryland men's lacrosse earned its 900th win in program history, defeating No. 18 Virginia, 12-6, at Klöckner Stadium on Saturday. The Terps are now one of three programs with 900 wins, joining Johns Hopkins and Syracuse. Maryland is also undefeated through seven games this season, with five wins over ranked teams. It's the first time it started 7-0 since 2022, when they went 18-0 and won the national championship.  Maryland began the game on a 5-0 scoring run through the game's opening nine minutes, with two goals by Elijah Stobaugh and Matthew Keegan and one score from Bryce Ford. The fast start and the Terps' suffocating defense kept them ahead to secure a wire-to-wire victory. Virginia (3-4) did respond with four straight tallies while keeping the Terps scoreless in the second frame, but Maryland outscored Virginia 7-2 in the second half to secure the win. This was the sixth time this season the Terps held an opponent under 10 goals.

Five Terps scored multiple goals: Eric Spanos, Elijah Stobaugh, Matthew Keegan, Bryce Ford and Braden Erksa. Spanos and Ford added assists to their stat line with one apiece.

Logan McNaney continued his dominance between the pipes, making 13 saves in the game. He has made double-digit saves in every game this season. Will Schaller, Colin Burlace and AJ Larkin all caused one turnover. All three of Maryland's caused turnovers occurred in the second half.

Aidan Aitken and Sean Creter were the other Terps to score goals.

Shea Keethler (nine wins) and Creter (three wins) took turns from the face-off X. Together, they won 12-of-21 face-offs. Keethler was 9-of-12 from the dot to go along with six ground balls
This was Maryland's 99th all-time matchup against Virginia. The Terps own a 52-47 head-to-head advantage.

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps scored on their first four shots of the game to take a quick 4-0 lead, behind goals from Bryce Ford, Elijah Stobaugh (two) and Matthew Keegan. • Virginia won the second quarter 3-0, making it 5-4 at halftime.

Celebrating 100 Seasons
  • The Terps boast a record of 900-290-4, dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). They are one of three programs (Johns Hopkins and Syracuse) to reach 900 wins as a program. Maryland has also finished with a .500 or better record in all previous 99 seasons. They're the only major program to never have a losing season.
  • Maryland finished the decade of the 2010s 134-42 for a .761 winning percentage, making it the winningest decade in Terrapin lacrosse history. Nine of those seasons came under the direction of head coach John Tillman, who has posted a 122-38 record and a .763 winning percentage at the helm for Maryland.
  • During the decade of the 2000s, Maryland went 111-49 for a .694 win percentage. In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland posted a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage.
McNaney On The Charts
  • Logan McNaney is second on the all-time saves list. With 13 in the game, he now has 678 for his career. Kevin O'Leary (705 from 1981-84) has the most saves in program history.
  • McNaney is back for his sixth season. The 2022 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player is wearing the program's historic No. 1 jersey this season. He's the first goalie to wear the number since Melvin Stephens (1989-91).
Single Digit Defense
  • Maryland is 132-12 since Tillman took over the program in 2011 when it allows nine goals or less. It includes a 51-game winning streak when holding foes to less than 10 goals from 2017 to April 20, 2024.
  • Maryland has held its opponents to single digits in six games this season, surrendering seven goals to No. 18 Richmond, Loyola (Md.) and No. 2 Syracuse, nine goals to No. 5 Princeton and three goals to Delaware.
  • The Terps were 6-1 in 2024 when holding opponents under 10 goals, winning over Loyola, Princeton, Ohio State, Rutgers, Princeton and Virginia in the NCAA Tournament.
Get To 10 And Win
  • Since John Tillman took over the program in 2011, Maryland has won 167 of the 189 games in which it has scored 10 or more goals.
  • Maryland is also 128-19 since 2015 when scoring at least 10 goals.
