COLLEGE PARK, MD – After leading No. 11 Maryland to its second NCAA Tournament in the past three seasons, junior
Ja'Kobi Gillespie, freshman
Derik Queen, and senior
Julian Reese were each named to the NABC All-District First Team today.
Queen headlined Maryland's postseason honors as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, a selection to the All-Big Ten First Team, a member of the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, and the first Terp to be named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team. He is a finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year and was on the watch list throughout the season for the Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy Player of the Year Award.
He enters the NCAA Tournament with the second-highest scoring average all-time among Maryland freshmen (16.3 ppg) and leads the nation in double-doubles (14) by freshmen. He averaged 25.0 points in a pair of Big Ten Tournament games highlighted by 31 points against #22 Michigan in the semifinals.
Gillespie was named to the All-Big Ten Third Team following the regular season after leading the Terps in three-point field goals made (80), assists (164), and steals (61), while ranking second in points (14.7). The junior guard has the fifth-most made three pointers for a single season in Maryland history. He is currently tied for the second-most made threes in the Big Ten and ranks fifth for assists per game (5.0). In both the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals and semifinals, he had nine assists in each game which is a new Maryland single-game tournament record.
Reese has made his final season in College Park a special one. The senior forward is averaging 13.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per game with 14 double-doubles which are tied for second in the Big Ten and 16
th nationally. His 9.0 rebounds are also tied for the third-most in the league.
Over his four years, the Baltimore native has over 1,443 points and 987 rebounds for his career at Maryland. He is one of just five players in program history that has surpassed 1,400 points/900 rebounds. He currently ranks third all-time in career rebounds and is on pace to become just the second player in program history to go over 1,000. That would put him alongside the legendary Len Elmore for one of the most prominent statistical records in Maryland basketball history.
After the regular season, Reese was named to the All-Big Ten Honorable Mention Team for the third consecutive season. Reese joined Melo Trimble and Anthony Cowan, Jr., as the only Terps in the Big Ten era to earn an all-conference honor three times during a career. Overall, he is the 16th player in program history to earn all-conference honors three times.
