No. 1 Terps Outlasted By Michigan In Triple OT Big Ten Opener, 11-10

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Nick Roode scored the game-winner in triple overtime as No. 1 Maryland men's lacrosse was defeated by Michigan, 11-10, in its Big Ten Conference opener at SECU Stadium on Saturday. The Terps are now 7-1 on the season.

The game featured eight lead changes and seven instances where it was tied. The Wolverines (5-4, 1-0 Big Ten) outlasted the Terps with Roode's goal with 1:06 remaining in the third overtime period. It was Michigan's first win over a No. 1 team in program history. After being held scoreless for the first three quarters, Bryce Ford netted two goals at 11:29 and 08:32 marks to tie the game at 10-10 and send it to the first overtime. The Terps held the Wolverines scoreless for over 25 minutes leading up to the game-winner with Michigan's last goal occurred at the 3:42 mark in the third.  Daniel Kelly led the Terps with three goals and an assist. He earned the 10th hat trick of his career and his third of the 2025 season. Eric Spanos (two goals & an assist), Braden Erksa (one goal & four assists) and Ford (two goals) were other multiple-point scorers for the Terps. Jack Dowd, a graduate transfer from Salisbury, also scored his first goal as a Terp. 

Long-stick midfielder Jack McDonald netted Maryland's second pole goal of the season. It was the third goal of his career overall. He also grabbed five groundballs and caused a turnover. Eric Kolar (three), Jackson Canfield, Will Schaller, Zack Goorno, Thomas Gravino, Spanos and Erksa were others who caused turnovers. 

Logan McNaney made nine saves in the game. This was his first game this season where he didn't finish with double-digit saves, falling just short. 

Freshman Jonah Carrier (nine wins), Sean Creter (four wins) and Shea Keethler (three wins) and took turns from the face-off X. Together, they won 16-of-27 face-offs. Carrier also picked up seven ground balls. 

Maryland's last 3OT game was March 4, 2023, resulting in a 13-12 loss to Notre Dame. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland and Michigan were tied at 3-3 at the end of the first frame. Braden Erksa, Daniel Kelly and long-stick midfielder Jack McDonald netted goals for the Terps. 
  • After two goals by Michigan to begin the second frame, Maryland outscored it 4-1 for the remainder of the quarter and led 7-6 at halftime. Eric Spanos netted two goals during the run, and Kelley scored his second of the game. Jack Dowd also scored a goal, his first as a Terp. 
  • Michigan scored four goals to Maryland's one. The Terps'' lone goal was by Kelly, giving him a hat trick and breaking up the Wolverine's run. Maryland trailed 10-8 entering the final 15 minutes. 
  • The Terps held the Wolverines scoreless in the fourth. Bryce Ford tied the game at 10-10 with back-to-back goals, and the game went to overtime.  
  • The game went to triple overtime, where Michigan netted the game-winner. 
Hat Trick Terps Multi Terps Update
  • Daniel Kelly (three goals and one assist) had the 25th multi-point game of his career. It was his 20th game with multiple goals. 
  • Eric Spanos (two goals and one assist) had the 22nd multi-point game of his career. It was his 17th multi-goal game.
  • Bryce Ford (two goals) recorded his seventh multi-point game as a Terp after transferring from Fairfield. It was his 48th overall, including his 36th multi-goal performance.
  • Braden Erksa (one goal and four assists) had his 32nd multi-point game in his three years as a Terp. It was his eighth multi-assist game.
Celebrating 100 Seasons 
  • The Terps boast a record of 900-291-4, dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). They are one of three programs (Johns Hopkins and Syracuse) to reach 900 wins as a program. Maryland has also finished with a .500 or better record in all previous 99 seasons. They're the only major program to never have a losing season.  
  • Maryland finished the decade of the 2010s 134-42 for a .761 winning percentage, making it the winningest decade in Terrapin lacrosse history. Nine of those seasons came under the direction of head coach John Tillman, who has posted a 122-38 record and a .763 winning percentage at the helm for Maryland.
  • During the decade of the 2000s, Maryland went 111-49 for a .694 win percentage. In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland posted a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage.
Pole Goal!
  • Jack McDonald continued the tradition of long pole goals, scoring the second of the season for Maryland in the first quarter. It was his first goal of the season and third of his career. AJ Larkin scored the other pole goal against Syracuse. 
  • Last season, the Terps had seven pole goals. They came from Ajax Zappitello (two), Colin Burlace (two), Jack McDonald, Nick Alviti and Larkin. 
  • In 2023, the Terps also had seven pole goals. In 2022, the team had 10. 
McNaney On The Charts
  • Logan McNaney is second on the all-time saves list. With nine in the game, he now has 687 for his career. Kevin O'Leary (705 from 1981-84) has the most saves in program history. 
  • McNaney is back for his sixth season. The 2022 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player is wearing the program's historic No. 1 jersey this season. He's the first goalie to wear the number since Melvin Stephens (1989-91).
