No. 2 Terps Improve To 8-1, Downing No. 7 Penn State, 13-8

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 2 Maryland men's lacrosse improved to 8-1 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play after defeating No. 7 Penn State, 13-8, at SECU Stadium on Saturday. This was Maryland's sixth win over a ranked team and fourth over a top 10 team this season. 

After Penn State (6-3, 0-2 Big Ten) scored the game's opening goal, Maryland responded with four straight tallies and went on a 7-1 run to lead 7-2 at the break. The last time the Terps held a Big Ten opponent to two goals at halftime was on April 28, 2018, when they led Johns Hopkins, 3-2, at half. The Terps held the Nittany Lions scoreless for 22:07 spanning the first and third quarters. They used their strong start on both ends to cruise to victory. Maryland has held opponents to fewer than 10 goals in seven games this season. 

Eric Spanos (three goals) and Braden Erksa (three goals) led the Terps' offense, each recording hat tricks. It was Spanos' eighth career hat trick and Erksa's ninth. However, Spanos posted his hat trick with three first-half goals. As a team, the Terps have recorded 10 hat tricks so far this season. 

Goalie Logan McNaney continued his dominance between the pipes, making 10 saves in the game. He has made double-digit saves in all nine games this season. He's also nearing Kevin O'Leary's program record for saves. With 698 saves in his career, he's seven away from tying O'Leary.  
 
Will Schaller helped anchor Maryland's defense by causing a career-high three turnovers and picking up a career-high four ground balls. He achieved his career-best mark for caused turnovers in the first quarter and surpassed his mark for ground balls in the first half. 

AJ Larkin was another standout defensively. He caused three turnovers and picked up three ground balls. The long-stick midfielder even scored his second goal of the season. Jack McDonald (two), Jackson Canfield, Shea Keethler, George Stamos and Spanos also caused turnovers as the Terps forced Penn State to commit 12 overall. 

Daniel Kelly (two goals & two assists), Matthew Keegan (two goals & an assist), Jack Schultz (two assists) and Stamos (two assists) were the other Terps to score multiple points. Stamos posted the first multi-point game of his career, and Schultz recorded his first multi-assist game. Aidan Aitken and Eric Kolar also notched goals. Kolar's goal was his first goal of the season. 

Maryland is 42-2 all-time against Penn State since the two programs first met in 1924. Since Maryland joined the Big Ten in 2015, the Terps lead the series 11-2.
Breaking Down The Action
  • Penn State scored the game's first goal at the 13:27 mark, but Maryland responded with four unanswered scores from Braden Erksa, Matthew Keegan, AJ Larkin and Eric Spanos. The Nittany Lions added one final tally, but the Terps led 4-2 entering the second frame. 
  • Maryland increased its lead to 7-2 at halftime. Spanos recorded a first-half hat trick, scoring twice in the second. Eric Kolar netted the other goal, and the Terps held Penn State scoreless in the quarter to lead 7-2. Logan McNaney made four saves at the break. 
  • The Terps led 11-5 entering the final frame. Erksa joined the hat trick party, netting two goals in the third. Keegan scored his second goal and Aidan Aitken also scored in the quarter.
  • Maryland added two scores from Daniel Kelly in the fourth to put the game away. Penn State outscored Maryland 3-2 in the quarter, but the Terps cruised to victory and maintained a comfortable lead. 
Hat Trick Terps
  • Eric Spanos scored the eighth hat trick of his career. It was his third of the season. 
  • Braden Erksa also recorded a hat trick. It was the ninth of his career and second this season. 
  • Maryland has 10 hat tricks this season as a team. The other hat tricks this season were scored by Daniel Kelly (three) and Matthew Keegan (two). 
Multi Terps Update
  • Eric Spanos (three goals) had the 23rd multi-point game of his career. It was his 18th multi-goal game.
  • Braden Erksa (three goals) had his 33rd multi-point game in his three years as a Terp. It was his 20th multi-goal game.
  • Daniel Kelly (two goals & two assists) had the 26th multi-point game of his career. It was his third multi-assist game.  It was his 21st game with multiple goals. 
  • Matthew Keegan (two goals & an assist) recorded his sixth multi-point game as a Terp after transferring from Binghamton. It was his 32nd multi-point game overall. It was his 29th game with multiple goals.  
  • George Stamos (two assists) recorded the first multi-point game of his career with multiple assists. 
  • Jack Schultz (two assists) posted the third multi-point game of his career. It was his first career game with multiple assists. 
Celebrating 100 Seasons 
  • The Terps boast a record of 901-291-4, dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). They are one of three programs (Johns Hopkins and Syracuse) to reach 900 wins as a program. Maryland has also finished with a .500 or better record in all previous 99 seasons. They're the only major program to never have a losing season.  
  • Maryland finished the decade of the 2010s 134-42 for a .761 winning percentage, making it the winningest decade in Terrapin lacrosse history. Nine of those seasons came under the direction of head coach John Tillman, who has posted a 122-38 record and a .763 winning percentage at the helm for Maryland.
  • During the decade of the 2000s, Maryland went 111-49 for a .694 win percentage. In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland posted a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage.
McNaney On The Charts
  • Logan McNaney is second on the all-time saves list. With 10 in the game, he now has 698 for his career. Kevin O'Leary (705 from 1981-84) has the most saves in program history. 
  • He also made 10 or more saves for the 45th time in his career and the ninth time this season. 
  • McNaney is back for his sixth season. The 2022 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player is wearing the program's historic No. 1 jersey this season. He's the first goalie to wear the number since Melvin Stephens (1989-91).
Pole Goal!
  • AJ Larkin continued the tradition of long pole goals, scoring the third of the season for Maryland in the first quarter. It was his second goal of the season and third of his career. Jack McDonald scored one against Michigan. 
  • Last season, the Terps had seven pole goals. They came from Ajax Zappitello (two), Colin Burlace (two), Jack McDonald, Nick Alviti and Larkin. 
  • In 2023, the Terps also had seven pole goals. In 2022, the team had 10. 
Single Digit Defense 
  • Maryland is 133-12 since Tillman took over the program in 2011 when it allows nine goals or less. It includes a 51-game winning streak when holding foes to less than 10 goals from 2017 to April 20, 2024.
  • Maryland has held its opponents to single digits in seven games this season, surrendering seven goals to No. 18 Richmond, Loyola (Md.), No. 2 Syracuse; nine goals to No. 5 Princeton; six goals to No. 18 Virginia; and three goals to Delaware. 
  • The Terps were 6-1 in 2024 when holding opponents under 10 goals, winning over Loyola, Princeton, Ohio State, Rutgers, Princeton and Virginia in the NCAA Tournament.

  • Since John Tillman took over the program in 2011, Maryland has won 168 of the 191 games in which it has scored 10 or more goals.
  • Maryland is also 129-20 since 2015 when scoring at least 10 goals. 
Conference Domination 
  • Since joining the Big Ten in 2015, Maryland is 42-10 in conference play.
  • The Terps are also a conference-best 11-5 (.688) all-time in Big Ten Tournament games. Since joining the Big Ten in 2015, the Terps have won at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title six out of a possible nine times (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022).
