Terps Drop Game Two Against No. 7 UCLA, 6-1

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland softball was defeated by No. 7 UCLA, 6-, in game two of its series at Maryland Softball Stadium on Saturday before 1,200 fans. The attendance was the largest since at least 2018.

UCLA pitcher Taylor Tinsley had a perfect game through 5.1 innings. However, Madison Runyan broke it up with a double in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mazie MacFarlane then drove her home with an RBI single. The run was Maryland's lone score in the game.
  Neither team broke into the scoring column until UCLA (30-5, 5-1 Big Ten) smashed two home runs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-0 lead. Up to that point, Bri Godfrey pitched 5.1 scoreless innings. She finished her outing, allowing the three runs and striking out a batter before Keira Bucher pitched the remaining 1.2 innings. She also surrendered three runs and struck out a batter as the Bruins later hit a three-run homer in the seventh. 

The Bruins took the series, and the Terps sit at 15-17 overall and 3-6 in Big Ten play entering game three. Maryland will play game three against UCLA tomorrow, March 30, at noon.     
 
Breaking Down The Action
  • UCLA put two runners on with one out, including one in scoring position in the top of the first. However, Maryland got out of the inning by turning a double play. 
  • The Bruins finally broke into the scoring column in the sixth. They hit a solo and two-run home run to lead 3-0. 
  • Madison Runyan broke up UCLA pitcher Taylor Tinsley's perfect game in the sixth inning. She hit a double, and Mazie MacFarlane brought her home with a single. The Terps trailed 3-1. 
  • The Bruins hit a three-run HR in the seventh to lead 6-1 entering the bottom of the inning.

  • 1200: There were 1,200 fans in attendance for today's game, the largest for a game since 2018.
