COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland finishes a five-game home stand as it hosts UMBC on Tuesday. This is the lone meeting between the two programs on the season. The teams split two games last season, both winning each game at home.

The Terrapins come into the game after losing its home conference series to Northwestern 1-2. The Terps led throughout game one of the series, taking a 5-3 lead into the top of the ninth. A two-run homer by Northwestern in the ninth would send the game into extras, where Northwestern would hit the game-winning home run in the top of the tenth. Northwestern would control game two of the series, clinching the series with an 18-8 win. In the series finale, The Terps offense would be keyed by five home runs, as they closed out the weekend with a 22-11 win.

Turn Up AC
  • Alex Calarco continues to be one of the top hitters in the nation. Calarco ranks among some of the top hitters in multiple categories as the team reaches the midpoint of the season.
  • Calarco's 13 home runs this season are the third-most in the nation and are tied for the most in the Big Ten. Calarco was the first player to reach double-digit home runs nationally, while his 47 RBI are tied for the fourth-most in the country.
  • Earlier this month, Calarco was named the Dick Howser Trophy National Hitter of the Month for the month of February. This comes after Calarco finished the month of February with a .424 average, seven home runs, and 22 RBI. Calarco clubbed three grand slams in the season's first month, while also leading the country in home runs and RBI in the season's first month.

McCoy's Brilliance On The Mound
  • Redshirt sophomore Kyle McCoy has been one of the best pitchers in the conference this season after returning from an injury that kept him out for the entire 2024 season. Through six starts, McCoy has a 3-1 record with a 2.79 ERA and 39 strikeouts.
  • McCoy tied his longest outing of his career against USF, going eight innings. The start for McCoy was his third consecutive with seven or more strikeouts. McCoy only allowed one earned run in the outing, with four outings this season where the lefty has allowed zero or one earned run.

Ain't It Grand
  • The Terps got off to a great start with the bases loaded, hitting six grand slams in their first six games. College records aren't available to confirm if a team has ever hit six grand slams in a six-game span. For perspective, never in Major League Baseball history since 1901, has a team hit six grand slams in a six-game span, let alone in the first six games of a season. The 2020 San Diego Padres hit five grand slams in a six-game span within a season from Aug. 17-22, 2020.
  • By comparison the 2023 Maryland team which finished the year with a national-best 11 grand slams, hit a grand slam in each of their first three games and four in their first six games.
  • Alex Calarco leads the pack with three grand slams this season. He is followed by Chris Hacopian, who has hit two grand slams this year. Paul Jones II hit a grand slam during Maryland's 35-12 win on Saturday, which was also his first home run of his collegiate career.

Scouting The Retrievers
  • UMBC comes into the game after taking two of three from Georgetown over the weekend. UMBC took game one at home, coming back for a walk-off win 8-7. After holding the lead for most of the game, UMBC went into the bottom of the ninth tied at seven. A walk-off double with one out in the ninth secured the win for the Retrievers. UMBC secured the series win on Saturday, earning a 4-3 win in extra innings. The Retrievers scored two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game and send it to extras. A solo homer from Derek Paris in the top of the 10th to complete the come from behind victory. The Retrievers went into the series finale with a chance for the sweep, but fell to Georgetown on Sunday.
  • The Retrievers are led in batting average by Anthony Mascuilli, who comes into the week with a .375 batting average. Leewood Molessa leads the team both in home runs (five) and RBI (18) after the team's first 21 games. Jesiah Carpenter leads the team with 21 hits, while stealing six bases. UMBC leads the conference in stolen bases so far this season, coming in with 41 on the year.
  • Nick Remy leads the pitching staff with three wins on the season. The righty has a 3.52 ERA, with two saves and a team-leading 16 strikeouts in 15.1 innings. Ayden Gonzalez leads the team in ERA at 2.70 over nine appearances. UMBC's staff has the fourth-lowest ERA in the America East, and has allowed the fewest earned runs and hits in the conference.
