Terps Shut Out Rider In Game One Hail Southern Classic, 9-0

STATESBORO, GA  – Maryland softball defeated Rider, 9-0, in its first game in the Hail Southern Classic at Eagle Field at GS Softball Complex on Friday. The Terps are 8-10 heading into their second game of the day at 3 p.m. against Georgia Southern (11-8). Maryland will play both teams again on Saturday.   

The Terps scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning. The inning featured a solo home run by Sammi Woods, an RBI double by Matti Benson, an RBI single by Sam Bean and a two RBI triple by Bailey Murphy. Taylor Borovac added an RBI triple in the fifth, and Benson grounded out to score her. Aubrey Wurst then recorded the final three outs as the Terps recorded a run-rule victory.  
  Wurst, a freshman, held Rider (3-10) scoreless, pitching her second complete-game shutout. She matched her career-high with nine strikeouts and surrendered just two hits. It was also her third win of the season. 

Murphy finished the game batting 2-for-2 with a career-high three RBIs. She also hit her first extra base hit with an RBI double in the third inning. With her double and triple, she finished the game with two extra-base hits. 

Woods' homer was the third of her career. Two of her home runs have occurred this season, as she also homered against Queens on Feb. 23. 

Madison Runyan drove in the first run of the game for the Terps with a hit-by-pitch with bases loaded in the second. Bean, like Murphy, recorded multiple hits. She went 2-for-3, adding two runs.

  • Maryland got on the board first in the top of the second as Madison Runyan was hit by a pitch with bass loaded, awarding her an RBI. The Terps led 1-0. 
  • Bailey Murphy doubled down the infield line, bringing home Gracie Wilson to increase Maryland's lead to 2-0 in the third. 
  • Sammi Woods, Matti Benson, Sam Bean and Murphy combined to drive in five runs in the fourth as the Terps led 7-0. 
  • Woods hit a solo home run, Benson an RBI double, Bean an RBI single and Murphy a two-RBI double. 
  • Taylor Borovac hit an RBI triple, Benson added an RBI groundout in the fifth, and the Terps run-ruled Rider.
