Terps Edged By No. 15 Ducks Despite Orr’s Late Homer, 5-4

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Jacob Orr's solo home run in the bottom of the eight gave Maryland baseball its first lead of the game, but Maryland still fell to No. 15 Oregon, 5-4, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Saturday. Maryland fell to 15-20 overall and 3-10 in Big Ten play.

The home run, occurring when Maryland and Oregon (23-9, 11-5 Big Ten) were tied a 3-3, was Orr's second of the season and eighth of his career. It also resulted in him scoring the 100th run of his career.
However, the Ducks scored two runs in the top of the ninth to recapture their lead. They previously hadn't scored since the fourth inning. The Terps then went down in order in the bottom of the inning and could not get the game-tying run on base.

Eddie Hacopian drove in two of Maryland's four runs with an RBI double and solo home run. His homer was the 21st of his career and fourth of the season. The senior went 2-for-5 and added to his career hits, runs and RBI marks that rank among the top 15 in program history.

Aden Hill joined Orr as Terps who went big fly. He hit his seventh home run of the season. The junior set a new career-best for a single season, as he hit six last season at VCU. He has 13 home runs in his career.

Kyle McCoy had a phenomenal outing on the mound. He pitched seven innings, surrendering just two earned runs on five hits. He struck out seven batters and walked two.
Cristofer Cespedes pitched the remaining two innings and also had a great outing. He surrendered just two runs on two hits, striking out three.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Kyle McCoy struck out all three batters in the top of the second. He allowed one runner on a hit-by-pitch, but the game was still knotted at zero.
  • Oregon took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a double and groundout. The groundout came on an athletic diving play by Eddie Hacopian to get the runner out at first base.
  • Hacopian got the Terps on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the third that just dropped fair down the left-field line. The Terps trailed 2-1.
  • Oregon got the run back in the fourth with a solo home run and led 3-1.
  • Aden Hill hit a solo home run in the sixth to make it a one-score game at 3-2.
  • Hacopian hit a solo home run in the seventh to tie the game at three apiece.
  • Jacob Orr hit a solo home run in the eighth to give Maryland its first lead of the game, 4-3.
  • Oregon scored two runs in the top of the ninth and regained its lead at 5-4.
