Maryland Closes Regular Season with Home Series Against Rutgers

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland closes out the 2025 regular season hosting Rutgers in College Park. The two programs have met 36 times in the all-time series, with Maryland holding the advantage with a 23-12-1 record. The two teams met last season in Piscataway, with Maryland winning two out of three during the weekend.

The Terrapins are coming off a weekend series sweep on the road against Minnesota. The Terps took game one by a score of 8-2, behind a three home run day for the team and a seven-inning outing from Kyle McCoy. In game two, The Terps battled back from an early deficit to secure a series win with a 8-5 victory. The final game of the weekend featured plenty of offense on both sides. After building a 9-1 lead after five innings, the Terps held off a comeback from the Golden Gophers, winning the series finale by a score of 11-10.

Year Two For Calarco
  • Alex Calarco is having a career year in year two in College Park. Calarco continues to be one of the top hitters in the nation. Calarco ranks among some of the top hitters in multiple categories this season.
  • Calarco's 17 home runs this season are the 24th-most in the nation and tied for the fifth-most in the Big Ten. Calarco was the first player to reach double-digit home runs nationally. Calarco has 59 RBI on the year, which are the fifth-most in the Big Ten.
  • Calarco was named as one of 45 players to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List. The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the best amateur baseball player in the country. Calarco is the first Maryland player to feature on the midseason watch list since Matt Shaw in 2023.

Alex Calarco continues to lead the Terrapins' offense in multiple categories and be one of the best hitters in the country. Calarco ranks in the top-25 in both home runs, while hitting for a .279 batting average.
McCoy's Brilliance On The Mound
  • Redshirt sophomore Kyle McCoy has returned to the Terrapins' rotation in 2025 after missing the 2024 season due to injury. In his return, McCoy turned in an impressive performance so far and leads the Terps pitching staff in multiple categories. Through eight starts, McCoy has a 6-2 record with a 2.96 ERA and 70 strikeouts.
  • McCoy tied his longest outing of his career against USF, going eight innings. The start for McCoy was his third consecutive with seven or more strikeouts. McCoy only allowed one earned run in the outing, with five outings this season where the lefty has allowed zero or one earned run.
  • McCoy has been very effective in his first season back from injury. McCoy has had five or more strikeouts in nine of his last eleven outings, holding a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.5:1. McCoy has the third-most innings pitched in the conference this season and has allowed just 20 walks across his 79 innings this season.

Walk it Out
  • The Terps' offense continues to be patient at the plate, leading the conference in walks with 315 and ranking tenth in the country. The Terps have five players who rank in the top 25 in the conference in walks this season.
  • Brayden Martin leads the bunch with 58 walks, the most in the Big Ten and the third-most nationally. That total for Martin is also one of the highest in single-season for a Terp, tied for the second-most in program history. 

  • Checking in next is Alex Calarco. Calarco has 44 walks on the year, the fourth-most in the Big Ten. Chris Hacopian follows with 39 walks this season, tied for seventh in the conference. Clsoing out the list is Elijah Lambros and Aden Hill, both of whom are tied 24th in the conference with 30 walks.

Brayden Martin leads the Terps with 58 walks on the season. The Terps have a total of 315 walks on the season, which lead the Big Ten and rank tenth nationally.
Scouting The Scarlet Knights
  • Rutgers enters the series after falling to Penn State at home two games to one. In game one of the series, Rutgers held a lead going into the seventh inning, but Penn State mounted a comeback to take the series opener 7-5. In game two, Rutgers battled from an early 7-0 deficit. The Scarlet Knights got four runs in the fourth inning to make it an 8-7 game, but the comeback bid would fall just short in an 11-7 loss. Rutgers closed out the weekend earning a 9-6 win. The Scarlet Knights scored seven unanswered runs to secure the victory. Multi-RBI days from Peyton Bonds and JT Thompson led the way offensively.
  • Offensively, Rutgers is led in batting average (.374) and hits (80) by Trevor Cohen. Cohen's 80 hits on the season are the most in the Big Ten and are tied for 15th nationally, while his .374 batting average is tied for the third-best in the conference. Ty Doucette leads the team in both home runs (11) and RBI (47), while hitting for a .338 average.
  • On the mound a pair of Rutgers pitchers lead the staff in wins, with Landon Mack and Andrew Rondini each tied with four wins on the season. Mack is the team leader in strikeouts with 61 and is tied for the ninth-most innings pitched in the Big Ten with 69. Matthew Cruz and Nolan Peel are two of the top arms out of the bullpen for the Scarlet Knights. Cruz comes in with a 2.50 ERA in 13 appearances, with 19 strikeouts and holding opposing hitters to a .203 batting average. Peel comes in with a 2.60 ERA in 27 innings on the mound, while striking out 25 hitters.
Stanley Bobb Baseball Player Development Center
  • On Wednesday, Jan. 14, Maryland unveiled the new Stanley Bobb Baseball Performance Center. This will serve as the new indoor training facility for the Maryland Baseball program.
  • This new state-of-the-art facility will allow baseball student-athletes the opportunity to train year round in a controlled environment, allowing them to continue to hone their skills regardless of the conditions.
  • The 8,500 square foot facility will have defined spaces for both pitchers and hitters in a climate controlled environment. The facility features state-of-the-art technology.
  • This project is one of the many as part of Maryland's Building Champions initiative, a campaign that enables investment in facility renovation and enhancement.
  • The facility is named after the late Stanley Bobb, who pitched for the Terps from 1954-57. A member of the Greater Washington Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, Bobb was the starting pitcher in the dedication game at then-Shipley Field in 1954.
